Its an engine warm up cycle:


Another way to get out of this cycle...if you have the M/S Steptronic set-up...if you push the gear selector over into the S (sport) gate...this will stop the "adaptive" funcitons of the transmission thus stopping the engine warm up cycle's programming. Once you've reached any of the requirements for ending the warm-up cycle (the speed limit is usually the 1st or easiest to acheive)...you can then push the gear select lever back into D to resume regular shift patterns.
