It's a bad coil on #3. I got the same error last summer/fall. Under hard acceleration at first then progressively got worse. Came up drivetrain malfunction error. When I checked the codes I had a misfire of #3 and #7. I was about 10-15K miles over due for spark plugs at that time. I replaced the spark plugs and all the coils myself and no issues again. I would suggest replacing all the coils just because when one goes bad others will as well.

BMW wanted about $1500 for that job. My mechanic wanted almost $1100 for that job. I bought everything on RMEuropean for $265 including overnight shipping. Took me about an hour or hour and a half to do the whole job.
