I had an e46 that needed a new compressor at about 100k. That's not uncommon. I have a 2008 e92 with about 55k on it and the a/c works perfectly. I have never had a problem with an evaporator. But I've had a number of cars where the compressor failed, or a seal began to leak. If your car is blowing hot air, any good mechanic should be able to do a test of the refrigerant pressures. You may need to pay for an evacuate and recharge, with a dye injected, if your refrigerant is gone. The dye is used with a UV light to detect leaks, and a pressure test will tell if the compressor is working. Sometimes the compressor seizes up. If that happens, you would know because the drive belt will make a lot of noise and you may smell burning rubber from the belts moving across the pulley that won't move, if you try to keep the ac on.
