Well, it wasn't like that exactly. When I started with BMW in 1995
we had an I-6 525i, a V-8 530i (yes, a 3 liter V-8), and a V-8 540i.
If I can recall correctly, there were Touring Wagon versions of
all 3. The E39 5 Series launched as a 1997 model in the summer
of 1996. The Olympics were a big part of the promotion.

They extended the production run of the previous 5 Series
a few extra months. There was even a super-rare limited
edition "Olympic Package" on the 525i, right before the E39
528i was launched.
