Z4 Battery

I'm due for a battery replacement on a 2007 Z4. If I dis-connect & replace with a new battery, will it loose anything that needs to be reprogrammed ? Keys etc. Not worried about the radio or clock, just the important stuff. Also, recommendations for a battery?

You'll lose the time setting on the clock and the window positions. Everything else will be good. As to brand, Interstate makes a battery that fits, and Autozone also carries one. I've got the Autozone battery in my car and it's been good for 3 years so far.

+1 for the Autozone battery, running the same brand

Remember at the big box auto stores (they usually offer free installation if you buy their battery)
They will tell you that they cannot change out the battery or that they are not supposed to.
The battery in the E86 is a non-AGM battery so there is nothing special that needs to be done. So be prepared to do it your self or insist if they give you any static

The battery in the M cars is AGM, and still, nothing special is required, nor would it be in this case if the owner wants to switch to an AGM battery. There is no battery registration procedure for any E85/E86. Hook up and go.

If they were never a problem, why did you have to swap them so often? Har de har, J/k

Do the window positions automatically reset? I assume you mean the positions of the windows at rest?

Rob, the windows will work fine when you reinstall the battery. However, you will notice the autodip feature isnt working when you open and close the door, so you will need to reset the window limits to get a full seal.

I just had to hold the buttons through a couple of full up/down cycles, then they were reset for 1-touch operation. Super easy.

Initialization is performed on the power window switch of the relevant door.
Requirements for correct initialization:
• Initialization with engine running
• Convertible top, doors and windows closed

Initialization comprises:
• Erasure of initialization
• Reinitialization

An initialization must be performed:
• In the event of malfunctions, e.g. no one-touch control function, no opening or if available no comfort function is possible
• After the power window drive has been replaced
• After work is carried out on the power window mechanism
• After a power supply interruption, e.g. disconnection of the battery or disconnection of the power supply to the door
• After the door window glass has been removed and installed or replaced
• After adjustment work on the door window glass
• After adjustment work on the convertible top
• After replacement of seals

Erasure of initialization:
• Open door window glass fully
• Operate power window switch in "Open" position four times within 10 seconds

This erases initialization of the power window, anti-trapping protection and toll function are inactive.
Check whether one-touch control (toll) function is inactive, otherwise repeat procedure.

Reinitialization:
Avoid a break between the two steps!
• Open door window glass fully
• Operate and hold power window switch in "Close" position (second switch stage)
• Once the upper end position has been reached, hold power window switch in "Close" position for approx. 2 seconds longer
• Open door window glass fully
• Operate and hold power window switch in "Close" position (second switch stage)
• Once the upper end position has been reached, hold power window switch in "Close" position for approx. 2 seconds longer

I'm starting my 5th summer with a Walmart Ever-Start. I disconnected it during the 5 month winter storage (keeping it on a tender is not available is the facility I use) and the car started right up when I hooked it back up last month. I know I lost the radio & clock settings and all the readings on the dash (ave mph, mpg, range, etc.) I expect to get through this summer w/o a problem. I believe the parasitic drain is faster now than it was when new but I don't think that's unusual for a 4 year old battery. I did not by an AGM model.

I too have had good luck with the Walmart batteries. I have one in my truck and a couple more in the boat. Sulfating, not age is usually the death of a stored battery and Battery Tender can help prevent that.
