X6 N63 turbo blown?
Hey there happy N63 owners! Or should that be unhappy?
Last week driving to a customer meeting in the Oakland maze, my car was flagged because of excessive smoke. Nothing new, of course, but this time it was missing along with it. I could see some smoke coming from the top left of the engine (passenger side) with a lot of racket on the upper left as well. It sounds like the turbo but I'm surprised it would be smoking there opposed to out the tailpipe only. It was smoking out the tail as well on that side. It looks like there is oil down in the engine "V" between the heads.
I pulled the hoses off the intake of the turbos (from the intercoolers) and the right side turbo looks clean but the one on the left has a lot of brown oil burned on the intake surfaces. This coupled with all the racket and grinding on the top left lead me to believe the turbo bearings aren't bearings anymore. Thoughts?
So now the question is to fix or junk? This same car was told the engine needs to be replaced due to the valve stem seals and low compression (110PSI) in one cylinder. I'm not putting 8,500 into the new engine and 5k into the A/C compressor (less if the engine is out). It looks like I can get a rebuilt turbo for $850 and a new one for a few hundred more.
So that's the question, fix or junk? I put 5,500 miles on it since taking it out of storage after waiting for the Bang non-settlement. It was running great even without the compression in that one cylinder. I can tell you stories about people underestimating this car...and overestimating its reliability!
