2018 Brakes squeal
I cant stand it anymore and everyone says its just the way it is because of the performance breaks.
They squeak and squeal all the time. Is this normal? |

Yes. You can pressure wash the wheels and brakes clean but it won't last all that long and you'll be back to the noise.
I've tried a number of things, none of which with great results...

I think it's more than the brake dust. All my previous BMWs brakes squealed when the wheels were dirty but the current generation Ms squeal all the time. I sound like an old school bus all the time, not just when wheels need cleaning.

I put in some Centric Posiquiet brake pads in for my coworker with a new X5M. He says the dust and squealing is much less and comfortably bearable. He said he's only noticed a slight squeak when very slowly creeping into his garage. About $142 for the set (front and rear). I was surprised at how long it took to get the pads to start fading while bedding them in.

I was noticing the school-bus squeal on my X6M only seems to be coming from the passenger side front wheel. Are others hearing it from all the wheels? Is it pointless to have the dealer take a look at this (I asked them to take a look at it last week while winter tires were being swapped out but they said they couldn't test/check due to rain conditions... they said need to check another time). Is it worth another trip to dealer or will they just end up indicating this is normal?

Seems like a common problem for all M cars, my x5m has the same squeal, sometimes so loud its unbearable. Taken it to the dealer twice and was told the sound is NORMAL. As the material of the brake pads are "M" Specs, this squeal will persist.
I've asked for private mechanics to have a look at it, they concluded that the brake pads are very 'thick', its meant for prolonged wear&tear, so users wont have to change their pads every so often. Well, changing your brake pads means voiding your warranty, so learn to adore and live with your bus. lol |

I just picked up my 2018 X5M on Friday and noticed the brakes squeal at lower speeds right before I get to a stop. It's not terrible but consistent. I have an appointment scheduled for Friday to take it back in for the brake and also the blindspot warning indicators not working on the highway. I've check to make sure it was on in the safety settings but it's still not working.
This is my first BMW and I can from a Porsche Macan which was pretty bullet proof. I hope this is not a sign of things to come with BMW. I'm glad I haven't filled out the survey yet as I will not be giving them a perfect score if this doesn't get fixed. I'll update you guys if I get any "breaking" news on the brakes. Cheers! |

Both of my 2018 M's (M4 ZCP vert and X5M) have brake squeal at low speeds. @Ibizaswife mentioned to get the brakes looked at by the dealership, but I told her this is the price to pay for M performance.

All this time I never gave it much thought and with that said it could be nothing, but after reading this post, I was out in the garage, looked and noticed that the Right Front Rotor is worn more than the Left Front Rotor. Mine is a 2015 X5M with just less than 9400 miles as of this post.
Just thought I'd mention this to see if anyone else had noticed and difference with their brake rotors. I could post some pictures as well, but I'd say the right side rotor is worn twice as much as the left side rotor is. The car drives perfect, stops strait, no pull or anything like that but in reading this post it made me wonder if there is something to those that have stated it seems the noise is coming from the right front... Thing is, I'd think you'd see more brake dust on the right front, but it's the same as the left.

I am very new to my F85. only 200 miles on it. Yes I do have the brake noise some time at low speed near full stop. I will perform bed-in process later to see will help.

Brake Squeal Resolution
I noticed this issue when I first received my 2017 X5M and it subsequently got much worse to the point where other drivers and even passengers in my X would make that face
![]() Every time I brought the X in for service I would mention it but no resolution. Last November 2018 when I had it at the dealership I mentioned it again to my advisor and he mentioned there was a bulletin and also new (revised?) brake pads that fixed the issue. The short term fix was to make some adjustment to the brake pads, which didn't work, and then to order the revised pads. After close to 4 months the new pads were finally in and I just had the service done on Monday. The squeal is gone but I am not ready to say the problem is solved, could just be new brake pads temporarily fix the issue. I don't remember the squealy breaks for the first month I originally drove the X off the lot brand new. This was all completed under warranty. I will advise if the squeal returns. Hope this helps someone with X5M/6M brake squeal. |

They say you gotta chamfer the pads to elim3the build up which causes the squealing. Either that or do 60mph and hard brake. And again and again. Safely. Agian ,thats what they say. Mines squeal too. Was just talking about it yesterday.

I commented on squeaky squealing brakes on two visits. On second visit dealer first attempted to camfer pads, ended up replacing pads. No more noise period!

My dealer tells me warranty is not covering replacement of the brake pads due to noise. Did your dealer cover the expenses. ??
Any hints to make them to change the brakes ?\ |

Look in NEWTIS.info, put in last 7 of vin and look under brakes to see if your vehicle is covered. I just kept complaining and went back 2X in two weeks

Having the same issue with my 2017 X5M. Only started about 6 months ago, but it's downright horrible at low speeds - ear piercing - all dogs in the neighborhood start barking, and wife and kids are embarrassed to be in the car. And let's not forget how much we all paid for these vehicles.
Dealer kept telling me the squeal was normal. I then took about 20 videos on different days, different ambient temps and different levels of wheel cleanliness; and sent them all to the dealer. On hearing/seeing the videos, they finally acknowledged that it was way beyond "acceptable" (whatever the h*ll that means). Since then, it has been in for service 4x; each time coming back that they either couldn't replicate the squeal (even though they had the videos) or saying that they "fixed" it, only for it to come back literally 20 minutes after I picked it up. This last time, they supposedly ordered/installed the new pads from BMW and were all patting themselves on the back when I picked it up about solving the 6 month problem. A day later; same d*mn ear-piercing squeal. I'm at my wits ends. After the brakes warm up, anything less than plowing into brakes to stop has everyone around me at stoplights, rush hour traffic, etc. staring me down. I reached out to dealer again, asking for a sit down with mgmt and BMW rep. I know, a bit aggressive, but I don't know what else to do at this point... |

Post them all on youtube. Hashtag the **** out of it. @them . Lets make this go viral. At worst we'll educate the public that we didnt just go out and buy a car we couldn't afford to change the brakes on. At worst. Maybe Mercedes would get in on the joke and contribute to the shame.

@vlodzjo, it was covered under warranty in my case. @cats22, exactly how I feel. Update: Same horrible squeal returned in about 3 weeks and is now the same as it was before the "revised" brake pads. I like my X5M but can't say the same for my family. Just so I don't hear the squeal, I come in hot and slam on the brakes at stops.
