Burning excessive amounts of oil and exhaust smoke

Having issues with my 2011 X5 turbo burning oil and now smoking exhaust. Can anyone tell me about their experience with these issues? Just found out my car already had the customer care package before I purchased a year ago. I'm hearing about a lot of issues with the N63 engine ***x1f629;

Possibly your valve stems. That's a common problem with the N63.

valve stems, N63 oil probs

Yes, I had same issue.

Long time idle, give gas, lots of smoke clouds.Reg. driving, no indication of smoke.
She's a burner alright.
Mine started with 1 qt every 2k miles, now more like 1 qt every 800m...139,000 miles
I started using thicker oil 20W instead of my trusted TOTAL 0/30
and added this Honey Engine stuff, specific for valve sealing available
at AUTOCARE... it's working!!

I religiously change oil and filter, always synth., every 5k miles and still have to replenish
at least every 800miles with another qt. Thicker weight, less consumption.
How high can I go?
When indicator oil level in Eng. management requests another fill up, yellow marker on dash, I'll add 2 qrts. So far, so good.

Now I just need a trusted BMW shop NEARBY that specializes in S65 engine valve replacement repairs. Any recommendations?
Apparently special tools make this job easier. Escondido, CA? That's a 4 hr drive from Ojai.... aaaaargggh!
Comments welcome -
I love this SAV with all the Sport options.
LOVE HER. brrrrrrmmmmm, vrrroooom.

Had the same issue - both turbos blown

Same issue, both turbos were blown and were pumping all the oil into the exhaust system, ruining the catalytic converters in the process. Car was less than5 years old and already had an engine replacement for a badly designed output manifold.

BMW was going too charge me in excess of $25K for repairs. When I objected they dropped it to $13K. I contended that they should cover all the repairs as part of the warranty of the second engine. Then they said the turbo system is not a part of the engine so bye bye warranty.

I dumped the POS. Will be my last BMW ever.

But I have a complete turbo replacement kit if you want one

You posted in the X5 M model section. You would have the S63 engine. The M version of the N63. I just wanted to make sure you got the best responses.

Thanks for bringing that to my attention! But the title of the Forum says "E70 X5 M and E71 X6 M (2010 - 2015)" and at least one poster mentions the N63 engine. So I am bit confused now :-)

I'd come back2U on that kit....but my twin turbos fine

BUT, Y'day I got an offer I could NOT refuse.

Our local BMW dealer was dumping their demo 2019 G01, X-3 M4.0i Xdrive, with all the options...
and I negotiated -and got a $13,800 deduction off the sticker, listed at $67k.
Yeowsa, was I impressed.

Comparison new G01 '19 X-3 M4.0i vs. '11 E70 X-5 5.0i :

It is amazing what current motoTech has done in less than 9 years of continued development. The 375 HP blows away my twin turbo X-5 MSport 415HP in 0-60 times, 8sp twin clutch, the varied driving conditions, Sport, Comfort and Ecogreen adds about 12-14mpg. to my increased range with less than 18 G tank....
Every option you can imagine on this new car, and I added a full maintenance contract thru 5ok miles/48 most.

Almost as big interior, really cool tech features everywhere, HK sound, run flat tires, not so found of, but heck, silent and great grip.
anthracite gray and black MSport interior, fasssst, real nice exhaust sound, great features, I've been totally wowwwwed.

Anybody interested in my E70 Twin turbo X-5 5,0 MSport with 137k miles. Totally full of options, 21" X-6 OEM rims with 9k miles Mich Supersport 285s and 310s rear. Yes she burns oil after idle, @ 1 qt/800 miles, some smoke then- but the engine purrs, growls and lovers speed demons, shocking 911s all day... and I have a transferrable maintenance and service contract to 180k miles which I believe will cover the valve stem clean up- ...

FOR SALE, Now with my X-3 I'll release the "Dominatrix" X-5 Sport for $12.5k
metallic blue, orig. paint int. Navajo Cinnamon leather, NO ACCIDENTS, 2nd owner, three rows, video/climate dual zone, everything as options EXCEPT heads-up display. Got that on the new one.

Let me know if interested, religiously changed oil every 5k miles, with 0-20W Castrol and now TOTAL since I bought her, clear title, really sweet, sweet car, see you up at Concours d'elegance Pebble Beach!

Let me know if interested, i will send pics

Quentin

Hello guys for those off you with the n63 engine there is a civil lawsuit out on bmw to address the issue of burning oil and smoking engines. The dealer will not tell you unless you ask. My x6 is being repaired by bmw for this as I text you. As long as you're mileage is under 120,000 it is warranted. Good luck.

The X5m has the S63 engine not the N63. If you were to post this on the regular X5 topic area you would have a much bigger response. If you search for this topic there are already tons of posts on this issue there.
