Anyone on this forum tried to repair their own ABS module. I am an avionics tech by trade and have access to a magi-lamp and solder station so I thought maybe pull it apart and check for dry joints or lifted solder or tracks. If so reflow them and see what happens.
Was hoping someone elso might have given it a go? Anyone got any advice?
Please post any information you can about the process if you attempt it! Pictures if possible! It's been reported that the problem area is extremely small and difficult for the average home soldering iron to access, in addition to the steady hands and good eyes required.
if you give up, try www.bba-reman.com They are a professional remanufacturing outfit in Mass. They fix just about anything. They fixed the missing pixels problem on my '03 525i radio. as well as my in-laws Saab radio display. Everything they fix is then covered by a lifetime warranty. I think they do lots of ABS units. Good luck
I have not needed bba-reman for my BMW but my 1998 Volvo V70 ABS Module crapped out in 2007:
- After $110 for a rebuilt ABS Module with core charge + LT warranty, you cannot beat that.
I cut mine open and gave it a try. Very, very, tiny even when magnafied equipment. I was unable to get the silver solder to stick. The wires fall apart at the slightest touch,so for me it was a bust. If you can afford to distroy a module if you fail, then I say give it a go.
BBA has some ebay auctions starting at $95 to repair ABS modules. I won one for 102.50 which includes shipping both ways. I don't know if they'll be able to fix it but it's worth a try.
Hey guys, ended up sending my ABS module for repair rather than attemping it myself. I had access to a micro soldering workshop but got a bit apprehensive that if I didnt fix it nobody would touch it due to it being "tampered with". As it is the repairer has put a little sticker across the seal "warranty void if broken".
Anyway he said that a lot of those small wires were hanging on by just the glue/sealer and that it wouldn't have been long before I had constant lights. All seems good now and have done a few hundred k's with no ABS/ASC lights. All up $320 including postage.
That's a good price, unfortunately we only have one repairer in Australia so no competition, that said the dealers charge about $1200 for a new one so still a bargain for me.
I am glad I joined the forum and became more educated about the whole thing, just wish I had known about the forum when I owned my E36, ended up spending approx. $6000 over the 7 years I owned it on repairs. Just sold it for $7000. (1995 Signature Edition E36)
You get a little silver plague below the handbrake that says "Signature Edition 231/500", obviously I got the 231st of 500 built, it came with leather seats, duel climate control, metallic paint (Morea green), sunroof, mags ect. , it was a good looking car, I was sorry to see it go. But my E39 M Sport is in a whole different class, love it.
I didn't know this (very old) thread existed until today when you posted.
I'm not sure about Brisbane, but here in the states, we use three remanufacturers:
1) BBA Reman (BBA)
2) Module Masters (MM)
3) Auto Truck Electronics (ATE)
Links to them (and tons more information is here and here).
If you want to try to repair it yourself, DIY instructions are here.
Hey Matmann, here's a link, I removed the module and taped up the plug ect and still drove locally, no problems, I think from memory it took 4 days. I have done nearly 15,000k's and no problems.
Thanks Gibo, I will remove my module on Monday and send it off. Anything I should know about removal procedure?
I assume it wont need recoding on refit.
Thanks again.
I had a good experience using BBA Reman. Website is http://www.bba-reman.com/US/. I mailed the unit to them and they returned it in a few days. Cost about $250 including expedited return shipping. They provide a lifetime warranty. Best part is that the codes are not changed so you just plug it in and go. A new unit would require having the unit recoded at a dealer or repair shop. As mentioned above, you can drive the car without the unit but of course you have no ABS.
Just to update this thread in case someone is doing research. I had my ABS/DSC module repaired by BBA-Reman here in Mexico. I live in Cancun and they are in Baja Norte, clear across the country. Nevertheless, fast, efficient, and now works perfectly. Price in Mexico was considerably less than the US price too.
Since I believe you can get the ABS control module repaired for about $100 USD at BBA (see details below), I'm curious how much it costs in Mexico, in US dollars?
