Valve cover Gasket replacement for Rescue Red

I know this is a treat for some of you guys...I've been chasing a couple of codes research says "service engine soon" light can be remidyed with valve cover or the CVV replacement... I'm starting with the 06 then I'll jump to the 04 for this week then for the next week ill move to the cvv for both as well... the 05 is holding strong no codes.

Pictures of engine with cover of would be better and more informative than underside of the actual valve cover..

I know youíll boo hoo it but Iíll post it anyway: the top end of that engine looks like trash from the picture posted. Post some better pics so that more experienced posters can give you some tips on what to do before putting the rocker cover back on; putting the cover back on as-is is like putting on new pants over an infants dirty diaper.

What tablet are you using? Those pictures quality looks like they came from a flip phone from 2004 era.. Motorola razr maybe.

With most or all of your X3s having lights and codes that youíre unable to fix, that prediction isnít entirely accurate. A sludged engine is a problem and the proof has been posted above. You missed a perfect time to clean and properly inspect the valvetrain, not to mention a VANOS rebuild as most likely needed at 200k miles.

Rescue red (210K) is back on line, runs like a champ there was smoking headers from the oil drips due to a pinched portion on the gasket, (she really runs like crap when excess air gets in there)...during the test run I burned that off, let her set for a day. The gasket was in good condition still. The sparkplug seals were probably the weakest point. None of the gasket/seals was hard and brittle turning into plastics. Heck, think I'll keep the VCG on hand it's OEM. However, the 15 or so small rubber grommet seals were tired and worn, but not cracked or leaking.... trashed.
Think I'll move to the VCG on the 04 (194K)... everyone is rapidly approaching 200k. Although I'm hesitant seeing that the 04 had good previous owners....(two functioning keys) but there is no better time then now to do the VCG replacement before they turn into repairs
Finally, for the 05 (192K) it's confirmed...hole in the evaporator core....damn!

Why do you make 7000 different threads?. Why not just keep it all in your one rescue red thread.

7000 thread count sheets, very nice.

Didn't the Razor and Rescue Red both come out in 2004?

Shouldn't this be moved to the "helps no oneĒ area? Aren't you aware of the detriment caused to this site?

VCG Replacement for the 04
Some have suggested that I do not separate topics but keep under one heading. I'm doing so.
Another suggestion was that I loose taking pictures with the "star tac". I'm using my old Galaxy something or another.
Another suggestion was that I take pics of open valves? so that the
"more experienced"
of the group here can have their say...

So have at it...

Valve cover Gasket replacement for Rescue Red

Well I hope you clean all that crap off the VANOS before reassembly. A few cam lobes look scored but I canít tell if thatís real or just the graininess of the picture. Was this one leaking, throwing positive fuel trims or is this ďpractice?Ē

Do the chains have slack?

The valves are beneath the cams. You canít take pictures of them unless you pull the head. You could pull the intake to see if the stems are coked but I donít see the need.

Using Break cleaner for the vanos.
Cam lobes scored one lightly.
Best you check your screen these pics have been fine... maybe I should make them smaller when uploading.
When the expansion tank split there was puff of smoke coming from the rear of the engine in front of the passenger side. I once saw that same area smoking on rescue red too but I don't know, because there was no leaking or smoking after that event. At any rate I do know that area is now addressed with the VCG replacement.
And to think I contemplated not changing it.
One of the grammet bolts was loose.
The electrical wire harness was not snapped into place.
The gasket it self was aftermarket...poor quality.

Practice? I do consider Rescue Red for practice,,,,so to speak.
The gasket replacement was definitely needed for the 04 ...one SP seal did break when it hit the garage floor. The rest of the gasket set was just beginning to enter the brittle stage.
No... slack in the chains...yaaah!
Tomorrow I'll do the VCG on the 05 and see what surprises she has for me.
Then we'll start the rotation over again by pulling the intake checking the gasket and the ccv on all three starting with RR..."Practice".

Can you help me find that?

I think you have a secret, the parts tosser has been officially accepted for Tokyo 2021 and you are getting ahead of the game

Well done

Seriously love your thread, but we are all locked down so it's an attractive nuisance for trolls like me.

Had to postpone completion of the VCG for the 05...no sparkplug seals.
Question: anyone ever hear of someone re-using gaskets?

My Dad always tought me to finish the job...so I did. Used the two in tact remaining spark plug seals (they still had life left in them). Used the vcg from Rescue Red it was in the best shape and OEM. The other two VCG were aftermarket and soon would have needed replacement anyway. I replaced the two with Victor Renz.
In my rush yesturday I ordered another VCG in hopes it would be here today...obviously I couldn't wait.
For the 05 everything was in place, tight and easily serviceable. The cover was soiled but not "trashed"...pressure washed it back to New. Used break cleaner for the vanos...ok. Went a bit more heavy in the use of applying the RTV.
I didnt go crazy on the bolts but they are a quarter turn past snug. Ill do a test run in the 05 by evening.

Used electrical contact cleaner for all coil and electrical harness connections (all 18) starting with Rescue red. Once ccv kits are delivered I'll start on the other half of the engine. Going to attempt to keep the intake intact while replacing the ccv.

Had to redo the gasket for 06...a small pinch had gotten past me...a week ago i noticed a fresh oil spot. In the process i just remembered i had one on hand that was delivered late when i was in the mist of doing all three. Whoosh!
This morning...no oil spot on the floor
all others are holding steady.
