Exhaust valve rattles when engine on. Has anyone encounter this issue?

Are you sure it's not the valve chain? I would have it checked out ASAP as this could result in complete engine failure.

Are you talking about the valve on the muffler itself? I noticed mine rattles every time I start the car but not after that. Still annoying and I would like to fix a well.

I have the same rattle when the X1 starts up. In order to fix it, you need to replace the muffler. $1,200.00 dealer part. I have yet to find one available anywhere outside the dealer. I was told by the dealer that it's completely "cosmetic", it has no impact on engine operation or anything like that.

I'm not a cheap-o when it comes to maintenance, not by any means (search my previous posts if you don't believe me). But..... yeah...... I'm not replacing this anytime soon.

I wanna say our X1 has done this since day 1, when we picked it up brand new. I'd hate to spend $1,200 + labor only to learn it makes the same rattle on startup.

I am really wondering if it is something we can just delete, disable, remove, or just lock open. How much does it really do? I wouldn't even have known about it if I didn't look into the muffler itself. It sounds like it might be a bit of BMW over-engineering or satisfying some marketing trickery that really doesn't affect me.
