Jumped into an e36

I just picked up a 96 328is with 121k miles last night for a good price. She will be replacing my 09 G8 GT which was totaled a month ago. While this car doesn't have ~345 rwhp and throaty exhaust from a 6 liter engine, it is a 5-speed manual! It also handles nicely (losing 1k lbs might be a factor).

I look forward to driving this new car and utilizing the ridiculous information provided by this forum.

Thanks!

Welcome. Much love for the G8, I'd love to get a G8 GXP to F around in.

Condolonces on that beastly G8, youll surely get quite acquainted with your e36 soon enough, especially here. Youve come to the right place, coming from an Acura i knew nothing about the BM world other than my admiration and respect for the sweet cars and motors. Came here and know the car inside out just about thanks to these dudes. Saludos de Mexico!

Man, that's terrible news about the G8. I'm a big fan of those cars.

Anyhow, welcome to the E36 fold.

Here's the new ride. I never saw myself in a red car, but its growing on me. The overall quality of these cars is crazy. It's the little things that still function in a 15 year old car that amaze me.

What's left of the G8 is in my album. I don't have the heart to post it. I do plan on getting a GXP someday. I had to learn to drive a stick before that day though! Automatic is so boring now.

I don't understand how a 6 liter engine can only produce 385 hp. Could someone enlighten me?

Welcome to the fest. Take the bimmer out on a twisty road and have fun!

^It's because there is a TON of untapped performance left in that 6.0L motor. You can get another 50hp easily by doing nothing more than a cam swap. The only reason it "only" has 385hp is because GM didn't want it to knock down the doors of the more performance oriented GXP model. Anyhow, there isn't much left of the G8 in your profile photo. Scary. Glad you're still around to tell the story.

Also, that's a really clean looking E36! Looks great in all original condition.

Ya the G8 really woke up from just a tune. The L76 is a "mix and match" of LSX Corvette engines. The DOD caused the engineers to really tune the power down. Its also is just what happens with production engines. Indy cars have 650 hp from 3.5 liter honda V8s. However, they don't come with 100k powertrain warranties.

The e36 isnt as fast but its freakin fun to drive! At a seventh of the cost, I should've gotten 2.

Welcome to the fest dude!

Heres a quick overview of the E36 section. First off, if you need to know something, search for it. We hound people who dont. If you act like a dooshbag then we run you out of town. We enjoy poking fun at each other. There are 2 Kens and 2 Chads (I'm one of them ). We hate chrome. Chrome anything. No chrome rims. No chrome doorhandles. No chrome trim. If you ask about it, be ready to put your fireproof suit on, because we're gonna the hell out of you. You can get an avatar by donating to the fest or reaching 100 posts. Make sure to replace your cooling system as well, those are known to poop when needed most. Off Topic thread is the place to be, and despite anything that CJ might say, he is uber good at call of duty

I've browsed around enough to know the search function is my friend. It's already answered several questions. However, there's nothing like asking an experienced person. They could help me find some aftermarket, plasti-chrome hoodscoops to glue on. They'll go well with my Chrome side mirror covers.

Joe, I wish my car looked like Lola. She's been around the block and has some, I believe women call them "problem areas". The lack of car payment will fund some projects to clean her up.

You will go far in these parts

Just keep your eye out for used stuff. Craigslist finds thread is a good place for that. I got my headlights from a link franklyn posted

Sorry to hear about the G8.

I think you'll like the E36, though, even though it's almost the complete opposite of your last car. Like the others said, take care of it, and it will be pretty damn reliable.
