Hi from a long time BMW owner
I have owned 12 BMWs over the past 18 years. I have owned mostly the 5 series (525, 530, 540) but have also run 2 X5s (both 4.4 litres) and a 3 series (328ci). Now have a 2007 Sapphire Black 530i which has been a paragon of reliability and a Sapphire Black Z4 coupe which is, I believe, is one of the best looking BMWs ever.
My experience has been that the US manufactured cars are less reliable than the European sourced vehicles. The first X5 I owned had a lot of small aesthetic problems (peeling finish on the interior door handles, rear hatch would not close etc.). The Z4 has had a new windscreen, cylinder head and steering column. The 2007 530i has never given me any problems and has been exemplary. All my previous 5s and the 3 were excellent and gave me no problems at all. I used to wish that I should have waited 6 months for the 535i but the forums seem to indicate that there are a lot of reliability problems with the N54 engine. Maybe I should hang on to my 530i? The Z4 and the 530 have the N52 255 bhp engine which has been fine in the 530 but needed a new head in the Z4 (a problem with oil circulation).
Looking to keep the Z4 but would like more power than the 530i has. I was considering a 550 or a 335i coupe. I look forward to joining in the discussions.
