2014 320xi, Y Cable needed?

I've been reading this forum for a while and thanks to the information I've been able to find here will be picking up my first BMW, a 320xi, in Munich on March 18th.

I just have one question I haven't been able to find an answer to, here or anywhere else.

Is the Y cable still necessary on the 2014 F30? I don't have the nav option, and my only other options aren't related to audio or bluetooth. (Folding seats, driver assist, lighting package)

I have an iPhone 5s if that matters.

If anyone knows the answer to this I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks!

You'll need the Y-cable for listening and controlling iTunes via the iDrive interface and controller. For phone calls you'll use bluetooth. You should get a Y-cable with the car, at least I did.

Okay, thanks.

I have another question, maybe you'll know the answer to as well. In the thread below, they say bluetooth streaming can be added simply by coding in the 4 series. Is this also possible in the 2014 3 series? It seems like they would be the same but the differences between BMW models is pretty confounding.

Note that bedsides the Y cable that comes with the car, you will also need an Apple 30 PIN to Lightning adapter.

Not sure why you need the Y cable with a 2014 since the apple OEM cable works on a 2011? What am I missing here?

on the F30, in 2012 and 2013 MY you cannot use the Apple cable unless you have the tech or nav package, I wasn't sure if this is also true of the 2014 MY.

It's a strange business. BMW feels they can drive more revenue via optional features by making tiny afterthoughts different across their models lines and years. Tiny afterthoughts that are standard in much cheaper cars and which people don't notice until after they've bought the car anyway because the sales force is itself too confused to know and point out differences during the purchase process.

The regular apple OEM cable works fine in my 2012 X5 without Nav. It does not in my 2014 335i without Nav, and instead requires the Y-cable. My salesman swore the apple OEM cable would work; he was wrong. I still wouldn't have cared enough to spend 3k on the tech package.

Exactly, my old $19,000 Mitsubishi had USB, bluetooth streaming, voice control, and keyless entry (ala comfort access) standard. It's a bit ridiculous that you have to pay for a $2,000 package on an already almost $40,000 car to get an insanely basic thing like bluetooth streaming or the ability to plug in your phone.

edit: i have no idea how to quote lol
