n54 cold start whine - any help diagnosing? Video included

Hello all. I'm brand new to the e90 game. Just picked up my first - a 2007 335i 6 spd. Car was a one owner, has 113,000 miles on it, and has a ton of maintenance done by PO.

Here is a clip from a cold start. I have this high-pitched whine, but it's only on a cold start and it goes away completely after the engine is all warmed up. Any ideas as what that noise could be?

Any thoughts / advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks all!

I have the same sound ever since some coolant spilled onto the alternator.

Check the pulleys on the serpentine belt, make sure they are ok.

Roger that and will do. Did you notice the noise going away on yours after your car warmed up too?

It goes away in a minute. And I can hear it only at the first start in the morning.
It was loud right after the spill but it quieted down months later and now I can hear it only with the windows down.

Sounds like metal grind from inside rather then a belt squeal. Regardless, check what Acoste said. His knowledge succeeds mine.

What I am hearing when playing your clip is a "high-pitched SQUEAK" that sounds like belt squeak (very slight slippage on crank pulley or other driven pulley). I would test by having someone turn the steering wheel lock to lock as you listen near the serpentine belt with hood up, and see if sound changes with additional force required to turn P/S pump. Also remember it takes more force to rotate the alternator immediately after startup.

Check the belt for cracking/glazing, and if the belt shows wear/damage, replace it -- for $20 better safe than sorry. If the prior owner provided service/parts records, when was it last changed?

^^^^
This is a common noise but its often a different problem. no one squeak is the same unfortunately but its easy to pin point as long as you have good trouble shooting skill and common sense. time to get dirty. remove the belt inspect it check for cracks. turn every pulley that belt turns by hand. any rough spinning, in out play, or hard to turn by hand etc is bad and need replacement.

i had a customer with a crv that made a similar noise. it was the ac compressor clutch bearing. this unfortunate soul had the black death.

Thanks for the info everyone. I have an open recall on the car anyways, so I'm going to send it into the dealership and see what they think as well. I'll update the thread when I get word on exactly what it is. Hopefully it will help someone else out in the future.
