Running problem

My friend has bought a 1993 325i that if you're in gear runs fine, but if you're approaching a red light then you have to gear down because if you put the brake and clutch on it tries to die. If you're idling with the clutch depressed and give it gas the car tries to die. The previous owner told him that it was due to a new alarm system being installed. Is that possible or could it be the mass air flow sensor? Thanks!

Extremely unlikely it has anything to do with the alarm system. Sounds like a vacuum leak. The car is running very lean, a very undesirable condition.

Had this problem a couple months ago. It ended up being the intake boot hose behind the MAF that had a massive crack hidden underneath. Common problem with this part.

Also check the IAC Idle Air Controller those early lines break and clean the inside of it. Cars that go extended periods without oil changes gum up and work poorly.
