E46 Anniversary Updates

Ten years ago I was on my way to Munich, just hours away from picking up my dream car via BMW's Euro Delivery. I drove it to France, Monaco, Italy, Spain, and dropped it off in Paris. It was a fantastic vacation.

There it is ten years later. I spent the day washing, waxing, rubbing the leather, then took some pictures. I think it still looks great and every drive still feels special. The dream lives on

Thanks, I still love it, but I guess that goes without saying.

Floyd - it also has a fresh set of PS2's, it's maintained per old school schedule, and has never had any paint work - but sorry, it's a keeper...

Eight years and 96K miles ago I took delivery of my car and then we drove all over Bavaria. ED is sweet and the Autobahn is a real head trip.

Amazing that these cars can still look almost new and perform like new after all these years. I keep throwing new parts at it before they go bad on their own. Satisfying to know the condition is solid.
Mine's a garage queen most of the year until summer and I run it across the USA. So hardly ever sees the sun and never salt, and no fade on the paint.

Necro on my own thread. Eleventh birthday wash and wax came a little late this year and was in Bay Area instead of Reno. The E46 is still my favorite car out of the four.

Nice looking car. Hard to think about an E46 being "new". Agree it is a great platform though. You don't drive much do you? If I had purchased my E46 with ZERO miles on it, 11 years later it would have over 340k miles on it. Yours is a baby, even at 11 years old. Congrats!

Thanks! The 330 is the garage queen, the other half even refers to it as the "Ultimate Parking Machine"... I think I drive a fair amount at 28k miles a year on my three cars plus whatever I put on rentals during business trips. I have only been putting on 3k a year on the 330 over the past few years, 7k a year on the 650, and about 18k a year on the snow / dog / airport hauler which is now an X5 diesel. I sure hope those diesels are durable cuz I want 10 to 12 years out of it!

The 330 is getting a full cooling system refresh for its 12th birthday next year

Dude! Looks awesome! Paint on the wheels still sparkling. 68s look great like that. Wish mine still did, but the PO's neglect took care of that for me so it's ZHP reps. Can't complain too much!

twelve year update

Twelve years since I picked it up in Munich and still going strong.
Now almost 58k miles.
Since ten year mark, it's had:
- New windshield washer pump.
- New battery (original lasted almost 11 years.)
- Cooling system refresh (preventive)
- New belts and idler pulley
- New speakers and Bluetooth module
- Normal maintenance of fluids and filters
Cosmetically, I has acquired a couple of minor scratches on the rear bumper but other than that it's holding up well. I had a couple of dings removed via PDR and two news ones came in the week that followed Those will get removed in the next month or so.

Thanks guys. It's not perfect (what used car is?) but I try to maintain a balance between driving it regularly in the summer and keeping it looking good. It gets parallel parked in San Francisco, driven to SoCal and Reno, and my dogs even go in it.
I have a bond with this car; thanks for allowing me to share it.

Thirteen years ago now...

Reviving my own thread again. I am now a little past the 13 year mark and now with 63k miles. It's been a year with ups and one down.

First the ups:
5k miles and no mechanical issues. Part of the miles were longer trip to southern CA and a 10 week stint as a daily driver while SO's 4 series was on the boat after Euro Delivery.

Maintenance wise, I had my Indy do some work at 60k mostly due to lack of time. It got fresh fuel filter, brake fluid, diff fluid, trans fluid, and spark plugs. Set me back $600 which is par for course in SF Bay Area.
It did the cooling system refresh and drive belts in July 2014 so now I'm waiting for OFHG, DISA, and CVV to act up but all is good now.
I DIY'd the standard yearly oil change.

Now for the bad. On that trip to SoCal, my friend was driving on I5 and hit a rock. To my horror she thought the car would clear it so she aimed right for it, unfortunately she was not in her Subie forester. The undercarriage has some minor damage and the resonator is a little lumpy. I went to a couple of body shops to get an idea of how they would repair the undercarriage damage but have not had it done yet. Since the car is never in rain or snow I'm not concerned about rust creeping in, but I need to make a decision and get this repaired.

Here are a couple of gratuitous pix from the last wash session

An E46 that gorgeous, in that condition, is not just a car. It's a responsibility. You -must- repair all damage and report back a year from now!
