///M Sport Steering Wheel Retrofit and Coding

Hi guys,

I have finished retrofitting my new ///M Sport Steering Wheel which I've bought off of eBay, and making the replacement and coding all myself, after getting necessary knowledge in this forum. I made this change because firstly, I didn't have Cruise Control, and also wasn't very fond of the feel Sport Steering Wheel offers. M Sport Steering Wheel is much more classy looking, little more aggressive and the matte leather is a charm to touch.

Here we go...

My old Sport Steering Wheel

New ///M Sport Steering Wheel

I'll try and tell what steps I've followed

1-Disconnect car battery (IMPORTANT!) (And don't close trunk because you won't be able to open it back with a disconnected battery.)

2-Remove old airbag and steering wheel following steps shown in this video. Use a thin&long flat-type screwdriver. To unmount steering wheel, I've used the same torque wrench which was for tyres.

3-Mount new steering wheel, following steps in (2) in reverse order

4-Connect battery

5-Start car and check if your multifunctional buttons on the new steering wheel works. If everything works, then you're done. But if your previous steering wheel didn't have Cruise Control buttons just like mine, then you'll have to do some coding as follows.

Coding part:
1-Using E-Sys, connect to your car and in Expert Mode->Coding panel, Read FA (VO)
2-Save current FA after reading. (If you have done coding before and you have backup of your last saved FA and SVT files, then you can directly jump to 4th step.)
3-On the right hand pane, under SVT Actual tab, click Read ECU and save SVT file in a safe location
4-In Editors&Viewers -> FA Editor, Load your saved FA file
5-Find the folder SALAPA-Element by expanding items and click on it, you'll see 3-digit option codes regarding your current settings of your car
6-If you see 249, just add 544 (in the correct alphabetical place). If you don't have 249, then add 249 AND 544
7-Save changes by clicking floppy disk icon
8-Go back to Expert Mode -> Coding and Load newly saved FA file
9-Right-click on the folder icon "FA" and click Activate FA
10-Load last saved SVT file by clicking Load under SVT Actual tab
11-Right Click on the ECU Module named FEM_BODY and click Code.
12-Repeat step 11 for ECUs "ICM" and "KOMBI" as well.
13-Disconnect E-Sys from your car and check if buttons now work.

Happy retrofitting!

You can always ask me if you wonder anything else regarding retrofitting and coding, I'll try my best to help my fellow bimmerheads.

can you inform me about the part numbers for
both steering wheel and airbag?
also my local installer inform me that you can not
