Well, someone needs to be the Beta tester!
Seriously though, when the N54 first came out, no one knew what it could handle until the tuners started pushing the boundaries. We now know that these cars could handle another 150 WHP easily, a testament to how over-engineered they were. We shall soon see if the same is true for the N20.
Bear did make one good point though: with the inline 6, 400 WHP is attainable with only 18 lbs. of boost, and that could be the defining point of what is reliable.

Map 5 targets 18 as well. Seems to do the trick.

I don't think he hit hard enough. Not a whole lot of damage.

Its actually been stretched a lot further. The 320/328 BMW boost management control pieces function up into the 23psi range where the N54 units are limited to around 20psi..

For about 3 years now, initially brought in from Europe, these parts have been swapped into the N54's by tuners to enable the big replacement turbos to function in there best ranges.

As a result there are more than a few 700whp+ N54's running 1/2 & 1 mile airport runs.

The fact that these airfields don't look like the Falaise Pocket in 1944 strongly suggests that BMW builds one very tuff engine.

Quote:
voip-ninja said "If it was just "marketing" I don't think they would spend the money to develop the power-plant further to produce the 300hp, they would just increase the boost pressure."
The point is where you start from. BMW is starting with an engine designed to take high boost levels from the get go. The N54 was running stock boost from 8PSI to 15psi right from the beginning. They were also capable of running "OVERBOOST" where the 335is was running 370ft lbs of torque in the exact same engine except for ECU software as the 300ft lb 335.

Its more than likely the VW based engines were designed with lower boost tolerance & they needed a different engine even if the same size to run more boost & more power.

You are also missing the point that BMW fudges its power ratings up or down like crazy. My 2011 335is was rated as 320bhp bhp is crank with the engine on a stand. My baseline dyno showed 319 to 321 at the wheels. This suggests the car was under rated by about 15% by BMW. The fact that it would run consistent [email protected]/110mph confirmed BMW was playing games.

Finally coded sport+ (2TB). Shifting is noticeably faster -- practically instantaneous.

In the past at the track I have been using "DSC off", but the throttle response and boost levels feel less aggressive than "sport" mode (even under WOT). I hope "sport+" will allow the same quck responsive feel of "sport", but with more wheel slip. How is drifting in sport+? Is it as effortless and controlled as with "DSC off"?

Happened upon a few other goodies as well...

Windows up/down with key fob
Removed disclaimer
Msport display on start up
Brightened angel eyes
Tire temps displayed with pressure
Launch control
Digital mph display
Sports display (hp/tq)
Removed the seatbelt schime
Removed amber lights from angel eyes (except on turn signal)
Paddles shifting coded for msport wheel

You have eluded that you been to the track in the past, however, when people ask you what track you go to you go silent, so what track do you go to and why not post some of your time slips... I'm sure myself and others (maybe Bear) would like to see what your 320 runs.

Lol, naw you're the only one who asked. I don't have to tell you where I test my car. I also provided a link to a track in our last discussion.

I am down to post 1/8th and 1/4 slips though! Now that the car is nearly complete I want to dyno and track it. Then do a write up so we can see.

Aka "I don't track it.... actually all I have done is debadged a 320 and threw some wheels on it. Matter of fact, it isn't even mine; I just googled"badasss 320. I really drive an e36 325i with e46 m3 fender vents and tinted windows."

Sorry, not into boy scout badges or racing 320s for that matter. Besides, I'm busy vacationing in Europe for the time being.

All g, I understand. Getting beat by a 320 could be a little embarrassing.

Yes ran a custom Map 4 for 50/50 with 100/93. Ran another custom Map 4 for 100% 100. On straight 93/94 ran BMS 335is Map 2. This was with pre & post ISO JB4 machines.

Strongest was post ISO JB4/ISO with Custom maps + stacked COBB/BMS custom back end flash by BMS + ETS FMIC + BMS charge pipe + 275X30 x19 Conti DW Summer T.

Nice. You went in.

There are a handful of mods I am still considering for the 320i.

- oil catch can
- FF wires
- EWG wires
- meth kit
- custom maps
- custom welding the Remus to be a turbo back exhaust.
- roll / sway bars
- swapping in a big turbo and forging some of the internals far down the line might be fun too.

Well, if I recall, Eagle was calling Night Rider here on where he tracks his car, specifically what track in the Southern CA area that he did his claimed 140MPH on. Night Rider replied:

"Lol, naw you're the only one who asked. I don't have to tell you where I test my car. I also provided a link to a track in our last discussion."

Then he goes on to say the following, specifically the bolded part:

I am down to post 1/8th and 1/4 slips though! Now that the car is nearly complete I want to dyno and track it. Then do a write up so we can see."

So why is he saying that once the 320i from Hell's transformation is complete, THEN he can track it? In previous threads he was talking about how fast he has gotten his 320 up to on the track.. He is also saying he doesn't have to tell anyone where he tested his car, what track, etc. Ok, fair enough. This is kind of like Cracked1 who refuses to tell people, even ballpark, what he paid for his 328i. Of course this leads people to believe the guy is paying like $800 a month for a 328i, because really, what's the big secret? Now maybe with Mario Andretti here, because of legal reasons, he doesn't want to tell people where he went 140MPH, but...oh wait... It was on a track, right? In which case, why wouldn't you tell people where you track your car? You won't tell people where because you (A) have never tracked your 320i from hell and (B) were just making that up.

So basically he admitted that he has yet to actually track the 320i but contradicted himself one paragraph earlier, not to mention a few threads back where he talked about how he has tracked the 320i. Just inconsistent is all.

Detective Columbo, signing out.

Dang dude. You are a trip.

Be careful misinterpreting what people say.

As you already know, I never said I hadn't tracked it before. Every time something changes about the car, it's simply exciting to bring it to the track to test it. What I said was, now that it's nearly complete I have to dyno it and track it for slips. I see you looking for inconsistencies where there are none. Also, I do not promote street racing or speeding outside the track. Maybe you should redirect your efforts toward saving up for that new car rather than trolling the forums.

The name is bmwtight2me, not Night Rider. Stop trying to derail the thread and stir up arguments.
