E60 / E61 (2004 - 2010)
BMW 5-Series E60 Sedan was first seen in the Unites States in the fall of 2003 with a 2004 Model Year designation. The E61 wagon followed shortly there after. The E60/E61 5 series is now available as a 528i, 528xi, 535i, 535xi, 550i and a 535xi sports wagon! -- View the E60 Wiki

530xi replacement battery recomendation?

Hello All,
Does anyone have a good battery recommendation for a 2007 BMW 530xi? I am assuming most any E60 chassis should be the same where battery dimensions and terminal orientation are concerned?

The last replacement battery I installed was a Duralast Gold 95R-DLC but it is apparently discontinued now and I cannot find a cross reference for it.

Your input is appreciated.

God Bless,
Ralph

Really Ralph? This has been discussed ad nauseum.

I always use Odyssey batteries. They are an AGM (absorbed glass mat) battery so they are more expensive then a lead battery (but worth it). They're one of the last batteries made in the U.S. AGM batteries are so superior to WET cells. I have one that has been in a car over 10 years (still test higher than new lead battery). I used to use Optima but since they started manufacturing in Mexico they are not as good as they used to be and no where near as good as the new Odssey batteries. Odyssey list 3 batteries for your car depending on options, all of which are rated higher than the original battery. You do have to buy the terminals separately.
Since its AGM you might have to register it if you dont already have an AGM battery installed in the car.

Check out this comparison:

P.S. I have never seen one over charge.

Thanks for the quick replies!

Yes Jay I know but when I performed a search I couldn't get anything on a battery thread to come up. I figured someone such as yourself would post the link though so thanks!

Last battery I put in my 2006 530xi was 1/28/2014...this one:

My car came with a flooded type battery and I just stayed with the same type.

I picked up an H9 AGM from Pepboys that's branded as Champion. All of the H9s that are available from the mainstream auto stores (AZ, Oreilly, Advanced, Pepboys) are all Johnson Control batteries. Only battery I could find that wasn't from JCI was Napa's battery that comes from East Penn/Deka.

Both H8 and H9 batteries fit in the E60's battery tray. I went with the H9 because I liked the beefy power specs that it has over the H8.

I had a FLA and was looking for an AGM for handling cold weather better. I looked everywhere. Nobody had them in BMW size, but the dealer had a ton - I think the same battery is used in their newer cars. The price wasn't unreasonable at about $350 for a big ol AGM.

I haven't had to top up the charge all winter. Granted, it's been a warm one.

I replaced my batter after five years for half of that, and registered it. There is no reason why you would have to "top up the charge". Your system should maintain the battery.

Yeah... You're american. I'm in Canada. For exchange rate and tax, add 50%. Plus stuff in general is more expensive here. For the same battery, I was quoted $550 and $650 from partsource and NAPA.

Also, I work in town so I don't drive the car long enough to charge it in the winter temperatures. With the FLA I had to top up the charge every 2-3 weeks Nov to March.
No parasitic drain. That's just the reality of short drives at low engine speeds charging a cold battery.

Burning Second, you talking about topping up the electrolyte, desulphation, or proper battery care?

That's the exact battery I just ordered for $159.00, with core return. I also found an Advanced Auto 20% rebate online and got another $40.00 off so the battery cost me around $125.00. That's a deal. My Duralast battery was very similar and it lasted 8 years.

I'll be driving down the road in just a bit to get it.

God Bless,
Ralph

That is a great price on a AGM battery. I know they are made by Johnson Controls and they seem to get pretty good reviews. I might give one a try next time I need a battery.
