2006 Z4 3.0I popping noise

Recently purchased this beautiful 2006 Deep Metallic Green Z4 with 60,000 miles to replace my old red 04 2.5I which was lost in an unfortunate accident. Took me a few months of searching to find a low mileage z4 with no accidents or 6+ owners.

In the past few days of driving I have noticed when I first start the car there is a popping sound. Almost like a fuse or radio pop. It does it four or five times then its done. It seems to come from the passenger side foot well. All electronics seem to function properly.

I am at a complete loss for what it could be. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

Air distribution flaps moving into place. Try switching on the ignition with the blower off.

Do you hear the same sound when starting the car with the engine already warm? Or does it only occur on cold starts?

One thought: Are you sure it is not coming from under the hood? A common issue with the N52 engines is valve lifter noise. At cold startup it would be at its worst. If this is the case, the remedies are (in order of increasing cost): 1. Give it an "Italian tuneup", i.e. drive the $#!t out of it with lots of high revs. 2. Change the oil being careful to use the exact BMW-spec synthetic oil for your engine. 3. Replace the cylinder head (major expense).

#1 took care of it for me.

It is clearly coming from inside the vehicle. It makes the noise before I start the car. It is in the accessories mode.

Do you have folding mirrors? I thought maybe it would have to do with the movement . Just a thought.

No folding mirrors so that ones out. I guess it could be a fuel pump but I feel as if there would be some other issues as well. This morning starting the car cold. It didn't make the noise. So I am just going to chalk it up to random Z4 noises lol. I really do believe it has something to do with the AC in some way since the noise comes from the passenger foot well area.

Have outside temperatures been hovering around 50F? Upon startup, the IHKA/IHKS cold start interlock will automatically open the defrost flaps. 10 minutes after shutdown, the IHKS/IHKA will also open the flaps if outside temperature is above 50F or close the flaps if below 50F.

So it is possible that you parked the car with outside temperature below 50F (causing the defrost flaps to close) and then the next morning the defrost flaps are opening themselves.

The temp has been fluctuating here in TN but I would say it has been typically colder in the mornings but this seems to make noise regardless of the temp. I start it up after work when its 65+ it still does it.

My 2007 does this when the AUX has a cable plugged in, but nothing connected. I just figured it was feedback form the cable.

It is defiantly coming through the audio system.
