New 2012 Audi A6 vs. 2011 BMW 5 Series

So, what are the initial thoughts about Ingolstadt's new A6?

Quote:
Photo Comparison: New 2012 Audi A6 vs. 2011 BMW 5 Series

Set to make its debut early next year, the 2012 Audi A6 was officially unveiled today. A competitor to the new BMW 5 Series and the Mercedes-Benz E-Class, the new A6 brings some of the design cues seen in the A8 model.
On the outside, the car still has the arched windowline that has remains a trademark of Audi sedans. At the front, the now famous Audi LED headlights get revamped as well.
With the new design, the A6 makes extensive use of aluminum and high-tech steel components, therefore the car is 176 lbs lighter than the current generation. The 2012 A6 is also shorter, sits lower and more economical than the old car.

Inside the new A6, the interior wraps around both the driver and front passenger. Leather and wood trip come to showcase the level of luxury expected from its customers.
At its market launch, the A6 provides both front-wheel drive and the all-wheel drive quattro system, and choice of five engines: the petrol powerplants range starts at 204-hp 2.8 FSI and the flagship is a 3.0 TFSI with 300 hp; in the diesels department,, there is first the 2.0 TDI, the 3.0 TDI and the 3.0 TDI quattro. The 2.0 TDI delivers 177 hp and the new A6 comes to CO2 emissions of 129 grams per kilometer, ie it is exactly on par with the BMW 520d F10. The V6 engine with front-wheel drive makes 204 hp and designed, while the four-wheel drive brings 245 hp.
The exterior dimensions of the A6 are relatively close to the BMW 5 Series, the Ingolstadt premium sedan is two centimeters longer. Despite the greater length of the Audi, BMW offers nearly six centimeter longer wheelbase and has shorter overhangs. The height of both models is 1.46 meters on the same level.

Inside, a standard MMI display comes with a 6.5 inch screen size, the largest available system provides 8.0 inches. BMW 5 Series has a standard 7.0 inch display and the larger model is 10.2 inches.

I'm not a big fan of the new headlights, DRLs and general 'face' of the new A8 and A6, but I like the overall design. The profile, silhouette and roof/windowline look good. I like the A6's trademark C pillar as much as I like the Hoffmeister kink. The 3.0T is a strong engine with plenty more potential if so desired, though I'm surprised there's no mention of a V8 especially for N. Am markets.

Interior is really had to judge without sitting in it, but at first glance looks good assuming there is a darker wood option as well. It seems dashboards have come full circle with first double humps (E60, E90), or a much taller dash to incorporate an LCD screen (C6 A6, F10) - and now a pop-up screen to preserve a traditional dash shape.

The A6 is really beautiful. Although the bulging rear tail lights are a bit too Toyota Camry for me. The proportions are more elegant on the A6 then the F10. It will be interesting to see how sporty the A6 is. The A6 and 5er are actually becoming more similar with time in just about every respect. F10 interior is more refined and Audi like. Audi A6 is becoming more sporty. F10 has 4 wheel drive variant like Audi 4 WD. Yet both retain their own aesthetic personalities.

Like the front, hate the rims but it looks okay from the side and not really feeling the back. The interior looks bad only because of the light colored wood which I hate, probably will look better with darker colors. The A6 only wins the front view match up and if you put the msport package on the 5 is the clear winner to me. But if you read it says it will be 176 lbs lighter and shorter which means that will probably drive more like what a sport sedan should(although after putting 2400 miles on my 550i I have more appreciation for what it can do.) I was impressed with the current A6 handling and liked it better in that aspect then the 535i but loved the TTV8 so I went with the 550i but I see Audi is really going after the sport sedan crowd hard.

As a former A6 owner, I was hoping it wouldn't follow the A7 & A8 design with the pop-up NAV system, but it did, so it is out of the running for me. The pop-up NAV reminds me too much of a Cadillac-like afterthought design.

As a current A6 owner (with an F10 on order) I think I made the right decision of ordering the f10. I had seen earlier spy shots and made the determination that Audi had not changed the overall style enough from the current C6 model. The greenhouse and side on view of the existing A6 which has been around since 2005 and this new one are near identical except the slightly longer wheelbase and obvious front and rear fascia change which looks like it was grafted on.
I do like the interior but think the current F10 is very competitive in this area. I am sure it drives well and the use of aluminum and lighter weight may give it slightly better dynamics we will have to see..

Mein Auto: Not worth mentioning
Let's see if they finally deliver a COMPETATIVE range of options for the US-Market. The current one lacks MANY features available in Germany. In the US, you couldn't even get a rear-sunshade on the current one. No ventilated Seats either...

Quality- and design-wise, Audi matches or even exceeds BMW, but if you can't "load" the car, it's not an option.

Actually, I thought that the outgoing model looked distinctive. My boss has an '09 with the 19" sport wheels and it looks great.

The new one...like a big A4.

I had high hopes for this car after driving the B8 A4 (which is too small for me) but no longer.

Many images here. http://www.zercustoms.com/photos/2012-Audi-A6.html Interior finishes and detailing are exquisite.

Sport Suspension and Sport Seats
Those who prefer an even sportier look can opt for an S line sport package, immersing the interior in an elegant shade of black. The package is combined with sport seats, a designated leather steering wheel, special inlays, sport suspension from quattro GmbH and 19-inch wheels. The S line exterior package provides the visual complement. The Audi exclusive range will offer a whole host of additional custom solutions.

I would compare the Audi A6 too the f10 M-Sport, that would be a better comparison IMO.

The proof in the pudding, will be how this car drives. Will it understeer and be nose heavy with light steering, like so many Audi's of the past? The fact that the car comes available in a FWD configuration , doesn't give me a lot of confidence that it wont.

Wow...the similarities between these cars really are quite striking! As an aside, I used to be an Audi person and remember when one could really distinguish these cars. Those lines have blurred as far as the 5 Series and A6 are concerned.

Really like it. That wood trim (with the many small strips) looks like something you'd find in a yacht- nice.

I know that it is just me but I don't think I would ever buy an Audi because of the appearance of the front of the car.

I just think that the trademark BIG center grill is not very pleasant looking. If they cut the grill size down in half, then it would look better.

Hmmmmmm.........looks like big A4. Not loving the new headlights. To me the headlights & grille make it look like the car is grimacing/scowling IMO. Bet it looks much better in person. Love the interior except for the pop-up Nav screen. Looks like an after thought add-on.

Not having experienced the new A8 (or obviously the new A6) in action, I think the switch to the pop-up nav screen occurred because the display between the dials now contains so much of the information, the MMI screen in the center can be used for less functions.

In my Volvo, the Nav screen is pop up and it doesn't look like an afterthought, it looks pretty trick. Of course it's used ONLY for Nav (since it's a 7 year old Volvo), so you don't always need it up.

YMMV

i'm on record as giving audi its props for its interiors and typically feeling as though their light years ahead of bmw. that being said, i find both the audi's 4-spoke steering wheel and auto shifterbutt-fugly. i'm also not crazy about the pop-up screen.

I really do not like 4 spoke steering wheels at all. They are fine when you are going straight, but when you are turning a lot it seems pointless and in the way.
I do like the interior for the most part, but I am not a fan of pop up navigation screens. It gets to be annoying. Also, I don't want anything on the dash moving around, that includes any goofy speakers, no matter how good they sound. Those of you who have kids know why.

I saw a new A8 yesterday on the road. It looked better than in pictures. The front grill is too massive (much like the 7 series). Also it din't have the DRL's on, so that may have helped.

Where do all these designers live? Planet boredom?

I can't believe all those folks went to Art School and came up with these yawning designs. New Fords and Chevys are more ground breaking in the design arena. It's a sad fact of life that the company boards these days seem to be ruled by marketers and accountants rather than designers and engineers. Form follows Function has given way to Market share follows Profit. Pity.

Forget share price value - boards should be compensated based on the number of reviews they win, and design awards. That would really shake things up I expect.

I'd gladly take new Ford Taurus's front exterior design any day over new Audi's "Look! We are really, REALLY trying to show you that we are EXTREMELY "modern" now!!!11" front ends (on new A8 and this A6) with all those clusters of Christmas lights and an "emo" headlight shapes

What's all the hoopla? The side looks very staid, very straight (parallel to ground) lines -- doesn't look fresh or new to me. Somehow the body looks somehow "plopped" onto the wheels, the overall integration doesn't look so great to me (i.e., door handles?). From the other linked image site, the interior side door handle panel, with buttons, looks (dare I say it) somehow Buick-like. The NAV screen and steering wheel look ridiculous, IMO.
