Egine shuts off while driving

Last time I was driving from my home to a friend.

Started the car and drove off gently like allways to warmup the car
Radio was on
After 2 minutes cruising at 70km/h I suddenly get this yellow warning message on my idrive and dashboard:

Transmission not in P may rolling

or something similar, the same warning you get when you shutoff the engine and you forgot to put the tranny in P

looked at the tranny, was idd in neutral
At the same moment I looked to my rpm gauge and it was going a few times back and forth between 1000 and 3000 rpm, wtf ??

I quickly pulled over in a sidestreet to review what just happen and what broke down.
Only then I realised that the engine was shut off. didnt hear it because of the radio.

dashboard lights and idrive and radio where still on
all happend in a split second

Started the car, everything was fine. Deceided to pull the codes the next day, didnt had my laptop with me and continued the journey.

Pulled the codes next day = nothing. everything was fine
was expecting at least 15 codes with all kind of alarmbells

next 1000 kms no problem anymore.

I had this error once 2 years ago, while driving, engine shuts off and the warning of the tranny not being in P.
dont remember having the rpm gauge going back and forth, but I didnt pay attention.
more to the guy wanted to kill me behind me for stopping in the middle of the busy 2 lane road.
I put the 4 hazard lights on and restarted the car. everyting was fine. no codes nothing.
Then I tought maybe I did hit the shifterknob without knowing or something.
so now 2 years later it happens again. and its dangerous. imagine this on a busy highway.
not so fancy for a 70k car

Does anyone had similar issues, information toughts about this?

I have a feeling if I take it to the dealer they wille keep it there for a week and say, everything is fine, we did not see any error. Come back when it happens again.

If no code was triggered, then one scenario is that the start/stop button was accidentally pushed to shut off the engine when the car was going 70km/hr.

Was the car moving or stopped when the error message appeared?

Car was moving, I was driving at around 70kmh

Only when this error message came up, I heard the gong and let go off the gas pedal to coast to the side and stop the car.

I did not push the start stop button, this I know for a fact.
In my opinion its hard to accidently push the start button

May be a defective sensor that detects when the car should be in park.

The "Not in Park" msg is a symptom, not the cause. The underlying problem is the engine quit while car was moving. Need to solve the stalling problem. Interesting that the engine restarts immediately, making troubleshooting very difficult. Reading codes immediately after stalling occurs, before shutting touching start button, might help.

Engine does not restart by itself, it restarts when I push the start button.

The "Not in Park" message is indeed a "logical" symptom.

Good tought to read codes immediately, will try this if it happens again.
Problem will be, most of the times your in a dangerous spot when your car is stopped.
but codes will allways be stored I would think.

I suspect an electrical problem or module starting to fail
Probably the ZGM
The problem is, how to diagnose this without faults to point you in the right direction.

Post#1 mentioned that the rpm is still 1000 to 3000 rpm when this happened, so technically the engine was still on.

At 70km/hr and 8th gear the rpm can be around 1000 to 3000 rpm, so may be it was just mechatronics getting confused somehow.

But it was also mentioned that when pulled to the side of road, the engine was already off, so how did that happen, e.g. ECU shtudown engine due to mechantronics fault?

its was just the rpm gauge moving, I would hear that when its physically revving at 3000 rpm
Msports exhaust

And the moment the gauge moves, I was also allready applying the brakes lightly to stop at a sidestreet

very strange behavior, and it happens all so fast

I found a youtube video that shows excactly the issue that I had only it happens once, in the video its contstantly.

the first 20 seconds of the video shows my scenario, note the rpm gauge acting wierd.

Not necessarily. When I lift off gas at 60 MPH, engine speed doesn't drop to idle. The forward movement of the vehicle will keep the engine turning until trans shifts to neutral and then the engine stalls.

Maybe. Or it could just be a warning message that pops up if the car is in drive with the engine off. So maybe the engine shutting off caused the warning, not vice versa. You could test it by putting the car in drive then turning the engine off with the car moving, see if the light pops up.
