35i exhaust smell in cabin when stopped at idle

I have searched here but have seen a mixture of responses, but not very much that is helpful. We have 2012 35i. We purchased last Dec. and are 2nd owners. We live in MN. Starting sometime last year, in the Winter, we notice a strong exhaust smell in the cabin. This occurs only when we are stopped and the heater is on. In the Summer, w/ AC, there is no smell. I am trying to avoid a trip to the mechanic. Can anyone provide a list of things for me to check?

BTW my favorite response is not driving into the wind. LMAO

Much thanks!!

Check how IHKA is supposed to work; AUTO, AC compressor snowflake icon button lighted, desired cabin temperature set. There is no difference AC from heat.

Check proper functioning of Automatic Vent Recirculate - AUC. It should shut on detecting hydrocarbon vapor.

Thank! I pulled the cowel and cabin filter housing and watched the action. The fumes go away, of course, when set on recirc. And the door closes. However, when I set to auto the door remains open FT. Is there any other way to definitively check the functionality of the sensor? How sensitive are they?
