WTB: Shop manual

My girlfriend's son owns a 2013 335i xDrive and I have been helping him quite a bit with working on his car. I am an experienced mechanic but he is not so I am happy to help him out given that I have the necessary tools, etc. Unfortunately my experience does not extend to the nuances of BMW vehicles.

I have looked at various manuals, for sale on eBay, and I'm just wondering if anyone has a recommendation as to which one to purchase. I would prefer not investing $140 in the Bentley manual as this is not my car and I have heard the Bentley manual leaves something to be desired. I do not want to use the TIS website as it appears to not be very helpful.

Thank you in advance for any helpful comments.

Brian

I believe the Bentley F30 manual is the only option other than TIS, unless you use the professional subscription services (Alldata, Mitchell). I have found them both extremely helpful.
It's his car - he pays for the manual! $90 from eBay or Amazon. You can sometimes find them in the forum classified or local regional section for a bit less. Makes a great Christmas gift (to you)!

Amen to that John!

Thank you for the replies, much appreciated.

I think I'm going to end up telling him that if I'm going to help him with his car that he is buying the manual! One reply posted a link to a downloadable one (PDF I would imagine) but I was wondering if there is a particular downloadable one that is better than another or maybe they are all the same, I don't know.

What are your feelings about the F30 Bentley manual? I had one years ago for a VW Rabbit that was excellent, just wondering if that's the same for BMW. Just went back and saw your post John where you said "extremely helpful."

Thank you once again.

Brian

I got nothin' on the manual front, but would like to make an editorial comment. Brian, this is EXACTLY the right way to ask for help on this forum. Props to you for avoiding drama, showing good manners in saying "please" and "thank you" and generally checking any sense of entitlement at the door. Some of the newer, younger members could learn from that. (I.e. the ones that come here demanding information from us old farts, then ride off into the sunset). Thanks for being a mensch.

I have a F30 Bentley manual. I like it. It is interesting reading but I've yet to use it for a major repair. I did use it to plan an oil change and also for identification of things in the engine compartment. Sorry, I don't want to give mine up.

There is a fair amount of detail but the manual is not perfect. I once had a 10 volume set for another car and that manual was detailed! For another car, I had a CD repair manual from the car company and it was detailed. That manual did not come in print, only CD.

BMW ISTA/D Rheingold is an awesome solution. Plus it’ll cover diagnostics and other useful features.
