It's almost impossible to fit a mtb in any car, including a Subaru Legacy, w/o taking at least a wheel off. Otherwise it has good space and I occasionally do it with a blanket laid down under. Most of the time I transport my bikes with my T2 hitch rack on my execuhitch/invisihitch, which I highly recommend.
Since the GC has a hatch (easier access) and the cargo space (seats folded) appears quite decent, I thought that It could fit a road bike in a "throw it there, get it out and ride" mode; that is what I usually do in the X3.
If you are really interested in the car tell the dealer that fitting your road bike into the GC is a requirement. Ask if they have one to try it on. My son did that when he bought his last new car.
I did exactly that 3 years ago when I leased a 335GT. I had an X5 at the time and wanted to make sure my bikes could fit in the GT, so I brought one of my bikes to the dealership to see if & how it could fit. I just turned the GT in and now have a 440i GC. I love the GC but haven't yet tried to fit the bikes...the cargo space is quite a bit smaller than the GT...I will miss the space at times.
