These are model designations used internally by BMW. Your car is an F30 body. And F31 is the current 3 Series sport wagon. If you look at the full forum list of Bimmerfest, you will see how the E, F and G designations are assigned. Each BMW basic body design traditionally lasts 7 years, then a completely new body design replaces it. It's useful to know your body designation when ordering parts or discussing the vehicle with other enthusiasts.
F30: 3-Series sedan (saloon)
F31: 3-Series station wagon (estate)
F32: 4-Series coupe
F33: 4-Series convertible (cabriolet)
F34: 3-Series Gran Turismo (hatchback)
F36: 4-Series Gran Coupe (hatchback)
In case you're wondering, F35 is the code for long wheelbase 3-Series sedan available in the China domestic market only. The other F3x cars are available globally.
