At 260,600 they let go and it was a massive knocking noise. Drove to the dealer for diagnosis, confirmed it was guides, picked it up and took it to a former BMW dealer tech that still does a little work on the side He saved me thousands.

what was the cost? I asked my guy how much of a headache is this? He said that's a $1300-1400 headache plus parts. I just dumped the car.

I paid around $2500 including rebuilding both banks VANOS system (dealer wanted $6k without touching the Vanos). It was an amazing deal, as it included all new chains, new tensioners, oil separator, guides, etc.

My car is cosmetically, easily an 8 out of a 10 both inside and out, and been meticulously maintained, so worth it (no other concerning issues that likely to fail soon after). For the average 2001 540, probably not worth it.

That's awesome. I'm not sure what BMW did, but the leather in those cars is much better than the ones on sale today.

do you have a recommended conditioner? You just apply it without cleaning first?

I can handle 2X a year.

Only major repairs were the timing chain guides at 260,600 miles. Otherwise fluids and filters, cooling system overhauls every 100k miles which included replacing the entire accessory belt drive system each time. Original starter, power steering pump, AC compressor, differential, transmission and engine. One fuel pump, a couple alternators, couple throttle bodies, one gas pedal replacement. Fixed all the pixels a few years ago. Still has original rear wheel bearings! (replaced front wheel bearings once, at around 120k as I thought they were noisy, it ended up being the tires) Leather is holding up impressively well, though I do clean and treat it occasionally. Carpets in great shape, though I have been through a few sets of mats over the years. Not afraid to spend a little money now and then replacing trim, door gaskets or emblems to keep it looking fresh.
If I may ask..How many keys have you gone through? My battery went dead six months ago and I cut the key open and repaired. The other day nothing/nodda/zilch. Still starts car but no key less entry. 17 year old key I guess.

I have all the original keys the car came with, two diamond shaped keys, one valet key and one credit card key. They all still function perfectly

Most important is cleaning the leather, I use Griots Garage Leather care spray. I use it monthly. The issue with conditioners, is it is very difficult for the leather to absorb it, as the color dye is really "paint" and prevents any conditioner from being absorbed into the leather. Both Griots Garage and Leatherique have products for deep conditioning. You can try them, I have had mixed results. You apply them generously, then cover in plastic bags or plastic wrap, and leave in the sun, to try to force it to be absorbed into the leather. Lots of time and effort. I gave up and just keep the leather cleaned of surface dirt and grit.

Both 540is I have owned have had over 200,000 miles. The interior is mint in this one and my old 540i too. My 08 Mustang GT convert int doesn't looks as good and it only has 72k on it. What ever they use is good stuff.

1st one no guide changes which is why it went away. at 255ish they started making a racket. At 261 they gave up the ghost. The new one 540i sport 6 speed, had everything replaced at 199, it is now at 216,000

My 540iT has 204,000 miles of which I put on about 185k and the guides just went bad. Iím putting in another 62k miles engine that has been resealed, tested, and guides replaced. Another grand from FCP Euro and it will have a new golfing system, mounts etc.... Iíll put the old engine on a stand and may replace the guides and play around with the cams, heads, etc.., something Iíve not really worked on. Use it as a training tool and then keep as a spare or sell off.
