My snow tires are non runflat on 17 in. rims vs the 19 summer rims and the ride on the winter is very soft but a little loud because of the aggressive tread.

If you mean that the top hits the windscreen a little hard, that is normal, when it locks the motor is not nearly as loud as the motor was on my previous 2006 but when that roof hit the windscreen it was a little hard too. I usually slow it down a bit with my hand to stop it from slamming, I don't know if it matters but I feel better about it.

I love www.getbmwparts.com.

currently adding the chrome-line roll bars & seat belt loops and more "plane tree" wood grain (fake... it's so fake) to the car... next is a red/imola soft top (because i like the new boxster)
That sounds really exciting, the red/imola soft top. That would go terrific with my car's color Do you have any idea what that would cost???

Water pump / Sticky Steering

For the '05 and earlier,
- The water pumps can fail at around 80k miles.
- "Sticky steering", which involves replacing the steering column.

..........
- For the water pump (and service belts), I agree on the failure rate. In fact, I replaced it, as preventive action, at around 90k,
- For the "Sticky steering" issue, though, it was unexpectedly resolved when ABS/DSC sensors (2 ea.) were replaced on the brake module. Since then the steering has been very smooth.

Cup holders are very delicate. Even with care they break.
Convertibles have an issue with the drain plugging up near hydrolic pumps, causing premature failure.
I Replaced windshield washer pump (Leaking). BMW floor mats suck; bend in the wrong place. Other than that great car.

Sticky Steering ?

- "Sticky steering", which involves replacing the steering column.

For the '06 and later,
- The N52 engine can have some valve clatter. At one time they were replacing the cylinder heads but now I believe they are just replacing the lifters.

For all years,
- The rear springs can break
- The power top motor can fail because of the design puts it in the path of water. You will see a rash of complaints here every spring. There are some great articles here on doing a DIY fix.
- If you ever leave the top open and it rains, water can short out some of the electrical systems, the most common being the airbag control module.

Have any Z4 you are considering purchasing checked out by a BMW-knowledgeable mechanic and you should be OK.
I have a 2003 and have this issue (sticky steering). Is it necessary to replace the column or can it be repaired (DIY)?

If it's a private sale maybe you know it was garaged - if not worth looking into
History of being garage kept is no guarantee of a dry top motor well. Water can accumulate via rainfall or car washes over the years, and it only takes a single leaf to plug the drain hole. My car had only 18000 KMs when I bought it a year ago, and is now at 24000 KMs, or 15000 miles. It has never been winter driven and its condition indicates it was always garaged. Nevertheless, I had to replace the top motor at considerable expense this summer. I suggest you get an inspection which includes a check of the drain hole condition.
