Winter Tire Question

I am over in Germany and get my US spec 2013 328 M-Sport delivered at BMW Welt on October 22. I am going to need to switch over to winter tires pretty quickly. The German BMW dealership wants around $2,000 for a set of tires and rims. Most of the military folks over here order from tire rack which is what I am looking into. I had some questions that I was hoping people would be able to help me out with.

1. The M-Sport comes with 18" staggered tires. Should I look at going with a 18" winter tire and wheel or a 17"?

2. Tire rack offers TPMS sensors built into the wheels before they ship them. The BMW dealership couldn't tell me if they would work with the system in the car and couldn't guarantee they could fit the BMW sensors into wheels not sold by them. The sensors from tire rack operate on the 433 MHz frequency. Can anyone confirm they work with the BMW system in the car?

Any other suggestions or comments are greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

No need to stick with 18s. Save some money and go with the 17 inch wheel/tire square setup.

Tirerack is pretty reliable. Give them a call, chances are they already tested it and can confirm for you.

Did you not order with all weather tires? The all weather tires say M&S on them so they are legal for Germany in winter. I'm in Germany too.

The winter (which are all season) are not available on the M-Sport.

winter wheels/tires

Both BMW USA and BMW Canada recommend a 17" set-up for the 335i M Sport or 328i M Sport (USA only). The recommended and approved snow tires are 225/50R17 Pirelli Sottozero II RFT.

If your car has the optional M Sport brakes, you would need 18" wheels and tires.

When I built the car, there was not a separate option for M-Sport brakes. Looking at the forum, it looks like this became available in August as a separate option on the 335 only. So I should be good here.

What about the TPMS from tire rack? Has anyone confirmed the ones they use work with BMW?

I had winters from tirerack with their preinstalled TPMS - no issues at all.. This was for my e90 335xi but I'm sure it will be the same for f30

as long as you specify the right car from the selector, tire rack will provide the correct tpms sensors.
