Manual swap problem!

Hello,

I have a 1998 328is which was automatic and now I have a manual transmission in it. I am having a problem with the check engine light. I had OTP automotive take a look at it and hes not too sure what the problem is and has never seen it.
With the automatic computer plugged in, it lights the check engine light up, but there will be no codes, read through the OBDii port or the engine bay connector. If I unplugged the automatic computer it will still throw the MIL and will give a CAN-BUS communication error with the auto ecu and the dme....
Okay, well I talked with Ken at OTP and we figured "lets flash the dme to a manual flash.. Still the exact same thing.
The car runs perfectly and all but I will not pass emissions, please any advice will help!!

Manual swap problem!

I do not believe an OBDII code reader is going to be able to read transmission codes.
You going to need to remove the auto transmission code from the ECU.

Talk with the guys at Condor Speed or UUC.

Well I contacted them and both said something along the lines of "I've been doing swaps for 20 years on these and have never seen that problem...

20 year old car and it needs to be compliant? Odd that reflashing the ECU has not solved the issue. My last two swap cars have had nothing like this. Keep us in the loop.

I had guys at flyingwernch put a new computer in it and it solved that issue but now there are 3 more codes! We are gonna try another ecu because its throwing a vanos jamming code but there are no rattles nor is it running badly. I pulled the codes a day prior to swaping the ecu and did not have them so hopefully its just a coding problem.

In most states, emissions compliance is forever, although the requirements are always grandfathered in some fashion. A 20-year-old car is not expected to be as clean as a 2-year-old car but it is expected to remain compliant with the standards of its day (or whatever slightly-relaxed form thereof the local government decreed "good enough").
