Coupe du soleil

So I found a fb market posting of a $500 e36 coupe. I had been searching for a winter car lately, and refuseing to buy anything obdl because that's just me so this was perfect. The pic showed a what looked like awsome condition body. Ad said for parts or whole, automatic, a duh for a $500 car. I offered $600and id drive the hour and a half to pick it up.

I get there and it doesnt have a key. Its a 93 318is and they say it overheats but it runs. I see the headlights are eBay sedan specials, the sunroof seal is pushed in, front bumper cover is screwed on the bumper, its a 5 speed, the driver seat stitching has let go completely, but the interior is great. The hood at some piont came up and broke the windsheild and ripped off the hood shock mounts to the hood which also doesnt close anymore. Ended up winching the thing onto the trailer and took it home a happy camper with slight doubts.

Got it home, drilled the steering column lock and pulled the spring. Pulled the door lock actuator rods so I wouldnt get locked out of my own car. Pulled the ignition switch and fired it up to find It has 222000 miles! It squeeled, loud. Shut it off and realised what a project I had started and didnt think it would be cheap at all. I searched online to find engines in the 800 range, heads in the 400 range. Found m50 swaps to be more of a car swap then a engine swap and got mad at myself for being niave.
Then just as I was going to throw in the towel I find a salvaged engine locally, still in the packaging, accessory and sensor loaded. Guy boaght for a 2002 swap but went another direction. Sold me the engine for $150. Has 88,000 miles and listed compression specs.
So, I'm quoted at $270 for a windsheild. And I can work the hood back to condition. I think il have not $1200 into it and no rust. Lol. Some photos as she sits now and the little stuff.

Picked up the engine. Got to shooting the crap with the guy with bimmer knowledge and builds and stuff. He gave me a freshly rebuilt getrag

I got around to pulling the engine out. Realised theres certainly enough room to pull the engine and trans without removing the front clip. But i ran into trouble. The exhaust manifold collector has become so carroded that it is impossible to remove from the downpipe. So... Ive decided to wait on engine removal when i can just cut the bottom off the manifold when a new one arrives in the mail. $75 for a good one online isnt too bad. But I might have a descent on on a z3 at work i can get cheaper tm. So next Sunday or possibly sooner i should be in business.

No offer the M42 as free to a lemons team. They are becoming increasingly hard to find and might be a team in your area in need of a head or engine.

Guess no ones takers. Lol. Dont have the engine in yet. All the goods are swapped over though. Have horrible knock sensors and broke the camshaft sensor while switching things. Also found the m44 manifold needs the sap hole welded closed if you dont have the bolt on valve to go with it. Also found my muffler absolutely desintigrated off. So looks like im forced to rig a junkyard muffler on for winter. Other than that, im still ahead of the game I guess. Hopefully before snow flies and sticks.

Got engine in today. It took me maybe 2 hours to figure out where everything plugs in and the coolant hose diagram, the vacuum hoses. I cleaned the icv that was froze up. Broke my knock sensors. Im going to splice in extra knock sensors from a e46 I had for no reason. Need to swap the oil filter houseing as e30 (the donar engine came from) dont have the power steering mount on it. Valve cover gasket installed. The grommets sucked hard to put on! Need to order an upper intake gasket, oil housing gasket, camshaft sensor. So theres another $150 dumped in. I think my total for the car is about $1050 so far. The windsheild is probably going to add about $300 on to that. But it will be ok for me. Probably cost me about $500 for everything to swap to a m50. So I think it seems time consuming, but I'm getting there.

What has happened to customer support these days. I have my chump/lemons car outside and wanted to have it in the garage to finish it this winter doubting that.

Ironic. Wifes e46 needs new balljoints and bushings. They are scheduled to be here Friday. 5 to 8 inches of snow expected tonight. Looks like I'll be a yeti mechanic. My crank sensor, upper intake sensor, and oil filter houseing gasket show up TOMARROW! Its going to be a bad weekend for me.

Yeah, I feel for you. I got my control arms done just in time as Thursday we are getting 3-7 depending on which hype you believe. lol. Far too early for the white stuff. Tell me you have a garage to work in? I have an oversized garage that I work in with heat so I am happy. I just wished I had a lift.

Not related to e36. Did wifes control arms.. All dandy until the inner nut locks. Had to torch it off. In the snow. The coldest bath ive ever taken. #never again. But the crank sensor randomly broke in half on it Thursday leaving me stranded for a day. That wasnt fun to do.

It will be 14f out tomarrow. Finally put the oil housing gasket on and the intake. Then its start and some quick snow donuts. Then for further inspection before she gets tags, plates, papers, the hardest ride she has ever gotten from a 6 foot 2 inch tall man with a taste for excitement. Lmfao

So I got it all together finally. Found the altinator housing is independent from the oil filter housing, which was a slight relief. Tore the old engine apart to find it was indeed cracked pretty intensely for sits and squiggles.
Realised I didnt have any knock sensors to rig together as the 42 knocks are 2 prong while most all other I have are 3 or 4. Theres another $100 added in the soleil bucket. Should be in Thursday. I should have the exhaust welded up by then. Maiden voyage scheduled for Saturday around 4pm. Will probably have to order another altinator as the one in use makes a horrid noise when rotated by hand.

Cars together. Runs ok. Has a 1222 code.
Going to check for vacuum leaks before I buy an 02 sensor. Scheduling the windsheild replacement this week. And I've decided to m70 the car in spring time.

The m70 with 113,000 miles. I don't think it needs much. I researched the components needed, a bellhousing adapter and clutch adapter which come to about a grand to fit a zf 5 speed. Custom front subframe and mounts, exhaust. Some small wireing changes with the m70 cluster. I think I can do it in a summer.

Found the bad icv after I cleaned the throttle body. Unfortunatly the engine swapped in is either bad low end or the rings are alittle stuck causing some posative crank pressure. When I pull the oil cap it fumes out pretty good. But it also might be the stuck closed icv. But it did move its first 20 feet today on its own. Still waiting on a windsheild as it was holiday break for safeligjt i guess.

Cleaned the icv. Adjusted the throttle valve. Car idles fine except with lumpy shaky engine. Still seems to misfire even though the cel 1222 comes and goes. Trying new gas, fuel system cleaner, going to mess with the maf today.

Finally got car out. I figured the crank sensor was the causd of lumpy idle as when i tap on the brittle wire the engine responds. Should have a windsheild in in the next couple weeks and thecar will be ready to roll.
