Blown E60 V10
I have a 2006 M5 awesome car until a week ago when without any indication of a problem my motor blew and oil went spewing out of the block and caught fire. After every thing I've read about this engine that was something I would have thought to be impossible. My insurance company came out to look at the car because of the fire but their position and mine is that BMW is responsible since the car is still under warranty only having 20000 miles on it. The insurance company did say they would pay for damage caused by the fire but feel the car should be totaled. I agree but think Bmw should replce it with a new one alhtough their techs think it can be rebuilt even though all the wiring harnesses, bell housing and a whole lot of other stuff under there is toast including the engine. Was wondering if anyone had heard of this happening to anyone else with this car.

![]() Seems like a troll guys. ![]() At any rate, since the car is 2-3 years old, I am sure they will give him fair market value. I see no reason for them to swap with a new car. Would be nice, but not realistic.

Thats not what the dealer told me and when you consider I bought my wife a 07 x5 and spent quite a bit on mods all work performed by BMW I think they should replace it but I'm still not sure if they're going to try and weasel their way out of it. Someone at the dealership suggested that if the car was abused I'd be responsible but when you consider it is supposed to the most badass sports sedan on the planet how would you define abuse. Did I drive it fast hell ya thats why I bought it not so I could say I own one. Anyway I should know something next week they said. And what exactly is a troll?? No pictures the fire was only under the car but i have before pictures I'll post.

Wow. Good luck with the car and getting BMW to foot the bill. You should DEFINITELY take pictures for your own purposes (insurance, potential lawsuit against BMW, etc.). Also, BMW will be able to tell if you abused the car. I believe they can get all sorts of info. from the onboard computer including the maximum speed, maximum RPMs, etc. basically a lot of driving info. Again, good luck and keep us updated.

would you happen to have pictures of the fire or damage?

No pictures of the fire all the damage was underneath the car and fortunately other people stopped with fire extinguishers and put it out before it got out of control, I did get to see when they put it on a lift it was just all the electrical wires and bell housing that burned there was no visible damage to the exterior. The mechanics told me that Bmw would probably have them replace everything and make it like new but I have my doubts especially with the electrical system not to mention when I go to sell it, if a potential buyer found out the car was on fire they probably would'nt want to buy it I know I would'nt..

Bmw's engineer finally looked at this past week only took three and a half weeks for that to happen. Gave me some quick explanation about lean fuel air mixture, sounds like a load of $^%. but I'm supposed to find out what the official story is.

Just buy a new one from the dealer. PS Most fires I have seen end up travlling upward not down to the bottom of the car. I'm surprised with that much damage you don't have a picture you can share.

Haven't updated by request but this affair is getting ugly. Also to the guy who said fires travel up, problem with that is the engine had several holes in it when the rod blew one was at bottom of engine so when the oil starting pissing out it hit the headers and ignited, burning the wiring harness and and other parts but nothing but nothing above except some paint that bubbled on body side moulding below front doors. I didn,t take any pictures for no other reason than i didn,t. If this doesn,t go the way it should i,ll be posting all sorts of info including letter fromm BMW explaining what happened, until then this is all I can say.

I took out the Black Box on my 3... Because seriously. Where does BMW get off ? Did I in some way agree to unlawful surveillance because I decided to do business with BMW? I didn't beat on my 3 anyway and I realize there's a ton of gung ho kiddies trying to do all kinds of nonsense in these cars...
But BMW and their dealers are getting a bit wierd. I had a dealer after I took my warranty up to 100 k telling me I had to do tires at like every 30 k and then when I refused to do them when they were wacking you for a standard tire... The douches intentionally loosened the ATF cap and didn't fill the engine with enough oil so the Service engine soon light came on. I'm sorry, you can call yourselves a premium or luxury auto manufacturer but with penny ante dealers and service departments like that ... you're nothing but a joke. |

SO before you go calling the guy a Troll.
Know this.. I've had mine for years.. and never a problem but there's this attitude that goes around like ... you're privileged to have a BMW and for them to even let you in the door to do the service on THEIR car ..
LOL oh yeah ... I'm not going to get into names but if you live anywhere near me , there's one dealer you should definitely avoid because I was in the car business for years .... And I suspected exactly what the shady little bastage had done and so I checked it out and I was right . That's how BMW service will treat you if you don't let them ram rod you for a couple grand in whatever they come up with when you don't even need it. Seriously, I was actually laughing that they would think someone to be that dumb to not know what they did. But I guess a good percentage of owners would have no clue and would drive it until they needed a more serious repair . Total strokers and I'm sure it's limited to this particular dealer .. but needless to say I was not too pleased and have left an email for corporate to contact me. |
