Debating between cars

I was hoping you guys can give me some opinions. I'm debating on a couple x3s to lease. Is there a huge difference between the 2019 and 2020? I'm between a brand new 2020 x3 30i with msport, convenience, parking and drivers assistance vs. a better equipped 2019 x3 30 service loaner that has msport, premium, DA, and nav. I'm just wondering the added features of the loaner outweigh the the benefits of the new model year.

Lastly, to throw another element in there is live cockpit pro awesome or pretty gimmicky. I had a 340 service loaner a couple weeks ago and thought it was cool but didn't get a chance to really mess with it. There is another car available that has that option but no msport which I contemplated.

The cars in question are in a different state so I can't just go and test drive them so I'm hoping you guys have some insight. Thanks!

You need to give us a little more info on the two cars to better vet your choices because exterior color, wheels, interior trim, sensa vs leather, and what the dealers selling prices are on the two vehicles matters. I'll take a stab at your questions any way since I went the service loaner route in May.

I'll start by saying that if I were buying a 2020 I'd order it exactly like I want it. I'd probably get Msport and delete the pano. All they do is rattle. I'd opt for a brighter interior since your losing a little light. My favorite color is blue with the cognac or black with blue stitching seats with carbon fiber trim. I'd opt for the adaptive suspension as well because the RFT's are rocks. White looks great in Msport and so does black.

Live cockpit is pretty cool and it gives the interior a much needed modern, upscale vibe. I'd want it. Also, keep in mind your paying $1700 for the nav on the 2019 whereas nav's included on the 2020. That's a pretty huge factor. I am not sure if you need heated seats but that could be a downside to the 2020 with the X3 on the dealers lot, depending on where you live if it doesn't have heated seats. I wouldn't get caught up in BMW's quirky safety features or having HUD but that's just me.

My advice is get what you want. I bought a service loaner and gave up some options. I really wanted leather seats and I regret not just ordering the perfect 2020. BTW I got 16% off MSRP on a 2019 service loaner in May. Considering it's now Nov. I'd want 25% under MSRP or I'd shoot for 12% under MSRP on the 2020. Good luck and let us know what you decide!

All good advice from J4B, and agree... if I'm getting a 2020, order it. They arrive relatively quickly, only coming from SC, not Germany. Typically four weeks or less. And if you go with the 2019, press hard. They want to move it.

We differ in one area...

HUD has become one of the greatest features ever. I'd never buy a car without it if possible. The ability to have some info put where you can see it without moving your eyes off the road is invaluable.

HUD is one of those features that doesn't sound life-changing if you've never had it, and then becomes mission-critical once you have.

PS: I have the Blue with Cognac--love that combo. Very fresh looking car, inside and out.

Yeah the HUD is great. The map and lane guidance shows up in here too (various other items too). Be sure to have the top view camera too.

I drove a 2020 330 loaner and thought the display was rather horrible, looked more like a video game.

Not sure if it's the same as discussed here, and of course everyone can have their own opinion

Order it and get the the non-run flats with the spare tire option. I had the 19" run-flats and the ride is just horrible with them. With only about 8k miles on my tires I just spent $1200 getting non-run flats and it's the best move I ever made! The ride is 100x better with the non-run flats, the tires are part of the suspension again.

All great points. If it weren't for the raised boot you get by going non run flats I'd go that route in a heart beat. A better ride is a good thing whether it takes adaptive suspension or non run flats to get there.

This.

If you're ever planning a road trip with your new X3, you need a spare, even with run-flats. Just ask this guy... and his sad tale of the $1400 flat tire:

I think I recall reading that post Putz. Craziness. I wonder if the next X3 generation will offer non run flats without the boot hump. I would go with non run flats in a heart beat. When my car was in the shop last they gave me a G01 without run flats and it's really a noticeable difference.

Everything's a compromise. The X5 has the same floor, spare or not. The non-spare X5's get a storage bin, or a third-row seat, or propulsion batteries (for the hybrid version). I suspect they went with a lower floor on the spare-less X3 to increase the cargo area volume, and then mainly to look good on specification sheets.

I don't like the floor of the cargo area being lower than the hatch lip. It means my old back would have to reach into the cargo area farther to lift heavy stuff up onto the hatch's lip before picking it up from underneath. With the higher floor, I can slid the heavy items partially out before grabbing them from underneath. The short fold down tailgate on the X5 is even better.

I max out my cargo area when I hit Sam's Club for bottled water. Our tap water stinks... literally. Even the cats don't like drinking the stuff, and that's saying a lot because they lick their own butts. So, we go through about three cases a week. Six cases fit in the back of the X3, but I can't pull the cargo shade over them. That's o.k. With the tinted glass, nobody's going to see them unless they put their face up to the glass, and the benefit/effort ratio of breaking into a car to steal bottle water is pretty low.
