X3 - 2011, 20d - won't start - advice needed

Hi there,
I am new here and this is my first post. I am not good with cars and do no DIY. I live in London.

Sequence of events:
- The car ran fine until midday Sunday 14th Jul. No issues, messages on dash, etc. Parked at a local park, took the dog for a walk, came back and the car wouldn't start. It wouldn't crank at all. Got an "ignition fault" message on the dashboard.
- Since I was stuck out in remote area, called the RAC out, they tried to repair onsite, but were not able to figure out what was wrong. They suspected it may be the battery, so hooked up a battery pack, this made the ignition fault message disappear, but then brought a range of other messages re the battery draining, ABS, etc. The car did crank at this point, but wouldn't start.
- They hooked up to the ECU and got an error: "DTC: 273C00,Camshaft sensor circuit, no signal"
- The RAC couldn't do much, so the car was then recovered to BMW (who strangely asked for the car to be taken to their "recovery site" as they didn't have space and I found out the recovery site is run by a contractor called Inchcape).

Got a call back from the garage today, saying:
- they have diagnosed it and are 99% sure it is the timing chain.
- they are not sure if there is any other damage to the engine and will only know once they open it up.
- if only the timing chain, costs could be between 1500-2000, but once they open it up, and if there is any other damage, costs could go up to 4000; they can't say.

I am not really sure what to do. I cant afford to but a new car at this stage and am not sure if the diagnosis/costs are accurate, if I should suck it up and get it fixed or look at other options (sell off as is even though i wont get anything, etc). The car has 85k miles on the clock.

Any experts here able to advise on possible issues? Am considering taking it elsewhere and getting a 2nd option (but every time i recover, it just adds cost as car has to be lifted and transported, etc). Any guidance would help!
Thanks, Mo
