X6 F16 (2015 - Current)
The all new 2015 BMW X6 is the second generation luxury cross over. BMW referes to the X6 as a Sports Activity Coupe (SAC) as it combines the attributes of an SUV (high ground clearance, xDrive and all-weather ability) with the stance, styling and roof line shape of a coupe. The F16 BMW X6 is build side by side with the F15 X5 at BMW's BMW's Spartanburg, SC plant. Read all about the second generation BMW X6 here!

Previous X5 Owners ... Questions on Move to X6 ...

So we have been looking hard at an X5 and are ready to get an order placed, but after driving a few of the cars available, I really did not like the body roll. Both had standard suspension, though I think one had Adaptive M, not sure. Either way, the roll was pretty evident and I found the 50i to be really jerky off the line with poor shifting.

So, now we are considering the X6, which I imagine handles better due to its lower center of gravity and slightly wider footprint.

The question to those who have made the move is: Are you happy with it? Would you have done something differently? I understand visibility is worse in the X6, and you lose quite a bit of cargo space -- but in the X5 you'd have to stack pretty high to take advantage of that space anyways.

Any thoughts on this would be greatly appreciated.

I made the move from X5 to X6 back in 2010. I went from a 2008 X5 48 to a 2010 X6 50. The difference in handing was unbelievable. I found the X6 to have ZERO body roll. I couldn't believe the difference. I did PCD and had a blast. I ate up the road course and put three 3 series to shame tearing up the track even though I was a few thousand pounds heavier than they were.

I love the X6 - I am on my 3rd. I just took delivery Friday on a 2016 50i. You do get used to the rear visibility. I pan all my mirrors constantly and have spot mirrors on my side views so I always know what's around me, I don't have any problem parallel parking either. The cargo space isn't an issue unless you're carrying something quite large.

Test drive one first though. I love the power but I'm not happy with the seats. I imagine the seats are the same in the F15 and F16. I'm finding a big difference transitioning from the seats in the E71s.

Let me know if you have any other questions. Good luck.

Laura

we too were looking at x5, when the wifey decided the x6 looked better (who am I to argue?? hahaha!). could NOT believe how different it handled, esp considering it's the same engine/chassis/driveline. could also not believe the curb weight that I didn't see until after the test drive, the x6 drives like its 1000lbs lighter than it is IMO. it has much more room in back than the exterior leads you to believe.

we have 2 infiniti FX that we love dearly, so the x6 body style feels like home to us, we didn't have any issues with the style, blindspots, etc…really going to enjoy it when it arrives!

Thanks Laura! What sort of deal were you able to get on the 2016 50i in terms of % off of MSRP? Also, did you go with Dynamic Handling Package on it? What options?

Also, when not including the seat area, looks like the X6 has a little more volume. It's when you add the seat area that the X5 takes over. Thinking about traveling with (2) large dogs ... might not work out.

I got the M sport, pretty loaded up. Sticker came to $96K and change. I paid $91K I will get the printout and list all the options etc.

I went with Black Sapphire, black Dakota and brushed aluminum trim. I entertained the black/Coral red interior but chickened out as I didn't see one in person before ordering. I had full Nappa in my 2010 and was bummed this was no longer available. It was like sitting on and old worn leather jacket. I didn't like color of the Nappa in the cognac black - it looked too orange to me.

If you are looking to travel with dogs, I would not recommend. If it's just general space, not an issue.

Thank you! Not sure I can do the dogs in the X5 either.

The difference between the X5 and the X6 in terms of handling is something I thought was a bit of a myth, until I drove them both.

I had E70 with sport package, replaced it with F16 with standard suspension, E70 handles much better than F16 with standard suspension. F15/16 has lots of body roll with standard suspension.

There isn't much difference between F15 and F16 in terms of handling. Unlike E71, stability bar and torque vectoring are not standard on F16. You need to add DHP if you want good handling, but DHP is also available in F15.

E70 with Sport Package only has the Adaptive M Suspension, no? Or did you have DHP on the E70? I would have thought E70 + M sport would still handle worse than an F16.

Also I thought F16 included torque vectoring that was not included standard on the E71. Maybe my dealer is blowing smoke?

Assuming DHP in both F16 and F16, I would assume the F16 would handle better?

My thing is I don't want body roll, or the least amount possible. I want it to drive as much like a 550i as possible.

I'm in Canada, the packages could be different.
E70 sport package here adds stability bar, other components are cosmetic, suspension is standard. Toque vector is not available on E70.

Maybe it's the steering wheel as well. I could drive my E70 at 140km/h on twisted mountain roads with single hand, with F16, I have to hold steering wheel with both hands even at 120km/h in sport mode, it just doesn't give you the confidence. The steering is heavy in sport mode, but you can feel it's artificial.

I am getting out of an E70 X5 and looking at the F16 - there are so many to choose from in Southern California but none with DHP option....

We are contemplating the move from the F15 to the F16 and I was amazed by the difference in the handling. Our F15 is the 50i and I always thought that the handling was good for an SUV. The F16 we are considering is the 35i and the first thing that I noticed is what appeared to be an incredible weight difference. Now I assume a lot of that is because of the difference in the weight of the engine but without a 50i F16 to drive and compare, I'm not sure. The second thing I noticed is that there appears to be more leg room in the rear of the F16 than there is in the F15.

Main difference between F15 and F16 is trunk space. I don't feel lack of interior space on F16. I test drove both F15 and F16 before because I originally wanted F15 and my wife wanted F16. There is no noticeable difference in handling.

I'm very happy with my F16 now. In Canada, F16 comes with lots of extra standard equipment like LED fog light, leather dash, remote garage door opener, sport seat, 20' staggered wheel, etc. There are also more interior color choices.
