Volume knob repair

Hi All, the volume knob in my X3 2.0d got broken off when my wife was loading the car for a tip run. At a recent service I asked the local main stealer to give me a quote for fixing it and was some what amazed when they asked for 1000 + labour to do the work. I politely declined their offer and am now looking to see if anyone else has had a similar problem, and found a solution to it?
The reason they gave for the high cost is that they have to replace the entire head unit for the professional nav/audio system, and not just the volume knob itself.
If anyone can help me with this problem I would be eternally grateful.

The first question is whether the knob itself is all that is broken, or if some shaft to which it connects is broken. If only the knob, the second question is whether the knob even comes off as a separate part, like most knobs do. If so, then buy the cheapest unit you can find on eBay and replace the knob. But if some shaft is broken, or the knob does not remove, then you need to get a used unit installed if you want to save money.
