URGENT: Need Buying Advice on Z4 35is

Long story short, I currently own a 2006 Z4M, and I wanted to upgrade to a Z4 35is. In the shopping process, I decided to instead buy a Jaguar F-Type. Jag listing is here:

https://www.plazajaguarstlouis.com/u...02d5cb571c.htm

This morning, I got an alert that a Z4 35is with 9k miles with Hyper Orange Package was listed online. See pics here:

https://www.vehiclehistory.com/ (type in the VIN, WBALM1C51EE634326)

Apparently this is one of three black/Hyper Orange Z4 35is sold in North America, and only two remain on the road.

**QUESTION:** Over time, do you guys think this 35is will generate the same cult following as the Z4M? Can you compare and contrast the pros/cons of this F-Type versus this 35is?

Everyone is standing by for me to return the signed paperwork for the F-Type, so I have to make up my mind in the next few hours. Any input would be helpful b/c I'm really torn on this decision. Thanks!

Also, as a Z4M forum-goer, I'm used to seeing a lot of derision toward the E89. I personally think it's aging incredibly gracefully and looks far better than the hatchet-faced 2020 Z4. I'm sort of wondering if this reputation will harm the long-term enthusiast interest in the 35is, or if that will be more than offset by the rarity and uniqueness of a low-production hardtop generation. Thoughts?

I think the best answer I could give you is buy the one you like the best. Don't buy one or the other because you think it will be worth more at a later date. The Jaguar might be the better "deal" in looking at their respective prices, but picture yourself driving them and which one will put more of a smile on your face. I tend to lean more to a convertible versus a hard top, but that is just me.

On the plus side, either car would be a great purchase! Hard to go wrong either way.

Good luck!

Well, thanks for the reply.

I've driven nothing but BMW Z cars for nearly 20 years. In that time, I have two regrets. First, buying a black Z3 instead of Phoenix Yellow. Second, buying M Roadster instead of M Coupe. I missed the boat on both of those, and I won't realistically ever have a chance to own either one.

I think I was mostly worried about feeling the same way about the E89 at some point in the future. Either regretting the Jag or regretting not having the E89 35is when I had the chance.

I'm curious as to what you chose. I was looking at the F-type too, and decided to go with the Z4. I had an '09 with minimal options and got rid of it after only about a year of ownership and got my 335is. I just traded that in for my current Z4 a few months ago. I liked the interior of the F-Type, but found them to be kind of loud and unrefined, and not nearly as quick as the Z4.

I would recommend you do research into the N54 motor and platform, the 35is and 335i (pre 2010) and 335is (2011-2013) have the same N54 motor. I came out of the 08 Z4M to the 335is and loved the car. The N54 motor does come with some issues that need attention. It is not a motor you can fail to take care of if you want that twin turbo goodness to keep on going. While the S54 had vanos and bearing issues, the N54 has charge pipe, water pump, HPFP and injector issues that need address at certain mileages. If you take care of the maintenance you will love the power of the car, if you don't you'll be crying the blues as you see it get towed to the shop. :-)

Best of luck.

I bought the F-Type. Curious which car you had b/c the F-Type was reintroduced for the 2014 model year.

Was it an XK8 you had? That was a much larger car and a 2+2. The F-Type is a 2-seater.

I haven't owned the F-Type. I had another Z4 in the past, but I was considering the F-Type this time around, but decided against it.

Simple answer..... the Z4 35is only comes in automatic.....thats an automatic "Do not buy" signal to me. Want a fast automatic... get an old Merc E55. Way better value and more power.
