Is this normal?

When I put the shift lever on R, the car goes backwards. Is this normal, or do I need to have my i-drive reflashed?

Also, I was thinking about 22" rims. Will this make the problem worse?

you need progman version 33.5.i to fix this issue. integration level will be N.5.4.T.T

also, 22" rims are not compatible with your car. either 21 or 23" rims are recommended OE fit. 22 is divisible by 11, which is bad.

I should add that the car is a 2008 (May build) E90 Sedan, Sapphire Black, Terra leather, with a sport package, and aftermarket trunk liner. I thought there might be a service bulletin for this configuration.

You have the trunk liner in backwards. Turn it around and the car will go forwards in the R position. As a bonus, you'll get a number of different settings which will make it go backwards at different speeds.

You need to reset the reverse pedal response. Start the car and put it in R and then floor it for 30 seconds. Make certain you have enough room behind your car.

On the BMW Steptronic, R stands for "Race". You should only shift into "Race" at speeds above 85 MPH.

+1, I thought R was like the race-mode found in the Nissan GTR. I haven't tried out out yet, but it should be a blast!

Hmmmm, I think a reflash might be in order. On my 335XI, putting it in R usually allows me to make right turns. Have you noticed that you aren't able to do that? That might be the problem, especially if you're going backwards.

I was afraid of that. If I take out the trunk liner before service, will the computer show that I was using a trunk liner?

you need to have the Trunk Liner Electronics Module's adaptations reset.

you'll need a DiS Plus diagnostic head with TIS cd level 8675309. and a male goat.
unless its a V3 trunk liner with diagnostic invisibility. then you might just have limp modes due to liner target not being met.

unplug the battery then follow this sequence with your iDrive controller and your steptronic paddles:
Up Up Down Down L-R L-R ShiftUp ShiftDown ShiftUp ShiftDown Press Accelerator.

I thought the "R" was for request for refund! You may want ask for one if it continues to go in reverse...

you must have the engine at redline before engaging R(ace Mode) or else you void the factory maintenance on the blinker system, you will no longer get free factory fill on the blinker fluid. i suggest picking up some of this:

Actually, the "R" stands for regurgitate, which is what will likely happen after following all of the directions given above, unless you have the swivel-seat option, which allows you to face the rear of the car.

Does BMW recommend only synthetic? Is it covered under the free maintenance plan? I only use BMW-recommended products in my car.
