Mein Auto: 2001 Z3
2001 z3 gas guage

I did several searches with no luck. I am almost positive zi have seen posys about gas guages suddenly quitting working. mine did compleye with red light, tank is full. any suggestions? where to start?

First off use the hidden tests in the instrument cluster to see if its the gauge or the sender. See link below.

If its the sender, run the gas tank down to near empty (320 miles from a full tank) and remove the fuel pump. The sender has a ceramic card that breaks. It can be replaced by one off Ebay.

so cluster works. drive 350 miles, are any other parts going to be necessary? o rings, gasskets, etc?

Please check your tank breather system if this card is broken in your fuel sending unit, otherwise they will keep breaking. !!!!!!!!

Just throwing this out there, when I bought my 96 z3 I had the same problem can't remember where I got the suggestion but I ran two tanks full of gas with a can of seafoam added in each tank full and that fixed the problem haven't had any problems since, my guess is the reostat on the gas gauge gets dirty and stops sending, hope this helps.
