Hi,

Do you have any advice on where to start looking for a problem?

My first guess would be the pullys in the belt system..the bearings do go bad and they must
be replaced

Pulleys are strong possibility. It also might be glazed belts. Try spraying a little water on the belts. If the noise changes or goes away, it's the belts.
