E63 / E64 6 Series (2004 - 2010)
The E63/E64 BMW 6 Series builds on BMW's sporty heritage with aggressive lines and an incredible motor to back the design up. Available in coupe and convertible trims with a standard 4.8 liter engine producing 360 horsepower and 360 lb-ft of torque, the 6-series is a popular choice that exceeds expectations.

Anniversary

Earlier today, Facebook was kind enough to remind me that ten years ago, I was picking up my 650. It was a 2007 6 speed coupe with all but one option box checked, 2 years of use in SoCal, 13k miles. I looked long and hard for the right car which had to have a stick shift.
It was at a dealership in Dallas, I flew down, signed the paperwork, drove to Albuquerque in wintery weather the first Day, then home to SF Bay Area the second day.

Ten years later, now at 64k miles, I still have it and itís been amazing. No issues to speak of. Iíve replaced the IVM, one battery, front brakes, three sets of tires, all kinds of fluids and filters and plugs and belts due to following old school maintenance. And thatís it. No repairs other than the aforementioned IVM.

I almost sold it 2.5 years ago after selling our primary residence and losing garage space, but couldnít part with it. The solution: shipping it to my parents in France where there is plenty of garage space. It was quite an experience getting it registered there, but no regrets; I still have my dream car and I get to drive it 6 to 8 weeks a year.

Nice! Great that you're still enjoying it 10 years later.

I have my e63 almost 3 years. Before that, I had an e46 for 18 years from new. It was hard to let it go but I quickly got over it once I got the e63. At the time I had planned to keep the e63 for a maximum of 3 years (and then update to an F13) but it's still a lovely car and I can't bring myself to part with it. Maybe in another two years......maybe.....

It seems rather extreme to me to have to ship your car to France just because garage space isn't available in SF, and then only being able to drive it 6 to 8 weeks a year. Surely there's more to the story than that!

I don't know why you think it's so extreme... It was a second car, I was only putting about 5-6k miles a year on it anyway, fewer once it was in a remote garage where I was alternating between the E63 and E46 (the third car.) I like this car, didn't want to sell it for what amounts to nearly nothing from a monetary standpoint, I go to France 3 to 4 times a year, will be living there again eventually when I retire in 3-5 years, and I was paying $175 a month for a garage to keep one extra part time car after selling the house.

From a financial standpoint, I'm way past break even point:
US yearly costs to keep the car and garage it:
Insurance $1,300
Reg $350
Garage $2,100
2.5 years after sending the car, I would have spent over $9k just to keep it rather than sell it.

Now let's look at costs to ship and keep on the road in France
Shipping $1,200
Customs fee $350
Tax - $0 because I'm French and I get a one time exemption
Homologation certificate from BMW $250
Light switch module with rear fog light button- $110 (from memory)
DREAL application and inspection - $80
Registration - $1,100 - it's a one time fee, not yearly recurring like in the US. I was initially charged something like $2,300 but then got a refund for over 1k Euro.)
US sized plates - $45
Yearly insurance $950
Controle Technique (Tech inspection - every two years) - $75
So, in 2.5 years, I've spent about $4.5k, about half of keeping the car in the US, and the gap keeps growing. On top of that I don't have to rent a car every time I go there.

If anyone is interested in the journey and the process I had to go through, here is the thread I had going at the time.

Thanks Guys. Can't replace it with another current BMW V8 attached to a manual transmission, so it's a keeper at this point

There is always a dampener type post just ignore, I remember your excitement at shipping it to France, following the ship etc. going through the whole process, even giving others an indication on how to do it. So pleased you continue to enjoy the car, and it does not surprise me that with good maintenance and treating the car well, you have had years without any issues.

+1

And given how well it's looked after there'll be many more years to come too .

Same here. I know you reached out to us about selling it. I'm glad you made the right decision about keeping it.
I bet it turns heads in France too!
