What would you do?

What would you do. I bought a Certified Pre-Owned 2014 328 iX with 32,000 miles, and in the last 30,000 miles have had 11 check engine lights and 8 service appointments. The details are in the image. I kept hoping they would get to the bottom of this and solve the problem once and for all. I have run out of patience. I have contacted BMWNA and requested a buy back, but although they said this situation is unfortunate, they will not re-purchase the vehicle. I don't think either BMWNA nor the dealership knows what the root cause of my recurring CEL is. They have replaced or repaired the same things multiple times. It's under warranty now, but when that ends, I don't want to, nor will I be able to afford the service appointments with no different results. I'm averaging a CEL every 61 days!

I really like the car other than this problem. Any advice?

The dealer needs to figure out what is killing all the sensors and
the catalytic converter. Way too early for a cat to die. Probably a common cause.

edit: You may want to find a mechanic with better analytical skills.

If they can't definitively fix the problem then I wouldn't keep the car.

At this point, I'd dump the car and move on to something else. Once the warranty expires this will start costing real money.

Thanks for all the replies. I couldn't sell this car in good conscience without disclosing the problems, and who would want to buy it? All of the work has been done at an official BMW dealership, so all of the problems will show up in a CARFAX. The dealership has told me that they have involved BMWNA in attempting to diagnose the problem using the data that is stored, but I don't believe the mechanic or BMW know what the real problem is. I don't know the codes but think they must be similar for the solution to always be one or two of the same fixes. Only once has the drivability been affected, but it went into limp mode on 294 in Chicago, which was a real safety problem at the speeds and density of traffic there. I know this will be even more of a issue once the warranty runs out. How do you get rid of a car that may or may not be a ticking time bomb, knowing that I won't lie to or deceive a potential buyer, that no one would want to buy? I am considering legal action, but wanted to give BMWNA an opportunity to rectify this situation. They have flatly stated they won't buy the car back due to mileage and age, and the fact that it was purchased as a used car. I thought maybe they would stand behind their pre-owned program more than just expecting me to take the car in for service every 60 days until the warranty runs out and can't sustain the repair bills.

You might try to work a trade in deal with this or another BMW dealer ....... if the dealer dings you on trade in value given knowledge of the repeat issues appeal to BMWBA for some goodwill assistance ......

Legal action?? You are kidding yourself. You have at best a vehicle that is worth $12-15K. You are going up against a dealership and manufacturer that has attorneys that deal with cases like this on a regular basis. They will string you out for years in the courts and you will bleed legal costs that are worth more than the car.

The smart move is to trade this in at some dealership and cut your losses and move on.

Are you a member of BMW Car club of America? If not, you should join. www.bmwcca.org. One of the benefits of membership is the Club Ombudsman who tackles this sort of issue for members. He will know what works and where to apply pressure. If you decide to join, PM me for my membership number, and you and I will both be entered in a drawing for a free M School.

PUMA, yes, at least once, maybe twice. Not a BMW Car Club member. Not sure I'm going to have a BMW long enough to join. I am probably out of luck with the WI lemon laws; they don't apply to used cars. Also, I bought the car in Cincinnati, OH and brought it back to WI. The dealer who has done the service is not the dealer that sold me the car. I had considered trying to find an independent shop and see if they could get to the root cause. There is a law firm in Milwaukee that attempts to get a buy back at the value of the car at the first occurrence of the recurring problem, takes their fees from the manufacturer and only charges if an agreeable settlement can be reached. A colleague from work referred them; he had a good result with a used Mustang lemon. BMWNA called me today and is checking with the WI dealer on a trade in with some compensation for the problems. I'll wait and see. Thanks for all the replies.

A dealer will buy it. They generally don't care, they just look for accident damage.

Good luck with that, it sounds like probably your best alternative.

Me, I'd first try to escalate it within the dealership and then BMW. They want to fix it to, both to reduce future warranty costs and to keep you happy.

If that doesn't work, or you've just had enough (BTDT) then take it to Carmax and buy yourself a Lexus. Or if you're really brave, another BMW. Yes, they can be a PITA, but if you get a good one, they are great cars.

I just did a buy back with a 2017 buick regal GS that had less issues than you have experienced. I just kept taking it back and calling GM until they gave me a case number. The dealer I kept taking it too finally told me they would not work on it any more. When all was said and done..I showed them that they had done 19k worth of service on a car that's olny worth 19k.....and since they never satisfactorily fixed the problem that I would keep coming ...That was the ticket....They refunded my entire amountplus all the payments I had made and subtracted a small amount for milage.
Now Im driving a BMW and am happy as a clam in sand....Just keep taking it in and don't get discourged
