NAV flash drive for Europe at Welt

I know they have given me a separate flash drive for the NAV in my cars before but I want to confirm they are still doing that. The car I ordered and am picking up March 27,2018 has NAV (obviously US) but wanted to confirm with someone that they are still providing a flash drive with the European maps.

Perfect! That's what I figured and have experienced before. Just want to make sure I don't need to take my Garmin GPS.

Do not remove the flash drive from the armrest console until you drop-off the car, or you just might need your Garmin

I wouldn't plan on doing that but what happens if you do? Why? Did you do it?

I did not, but several here have and regretted it. You can't just put the flash drive back in the USB slot, there's an (undocumented) procedure to re-initialize the drive to access the map data.

Go ahead, give it try and prove them wrong

The flash drive is connected to the USB within the center arm rest. There is now a 2nd USB port located under the radio/AC controls which is external. There should be no need to open the center armrest unless you have wireless charging.

I’m also confirming what has been posted above.

so how do you charge your phone with the USB nav flash drive? Use the external one by the a/c control? Can anyone confirm this?

Yes, the external one (picture attached- USB location circled in red) works.

PS No comments that I’m not saving 6MT for future G80/G82/G83 by ordering DCT for the F83.

thanks for that pic. I assume my '18 540i will have the second USB charging area so I can keep the USB nav in the center console and charge my phone in USB...but wait I think I ordered the wireless charging on my car and I have an iphone 8 so that should work fine!

Things have probably changed in two years, but the maps on the USB are not quite as full-featured as the North America maps. Also there were not a lot of POI’s on the USB stick, so we were inputting most destinations by address. My 2016 only has the USB port in the console, but I purchased the snap-in adapter at the Welt store so was able to charge my phone. The maps on the stick worked just fine - drove 1,500 miles in Europe and did not get lost. I did NOT pull the USB out though.

I got the drive with my X3 at the Welt and the maps seem to have all the features. I can do things like search gas stations along my route and stuff like that and all of the 3D buildings work. The drive is pretty large, I was hoping to be able to pull it and clone it to something small, like a san disk ultra fit. I haven't really been using the center console because I'm afraid of accidentally knocking it out or breaking it off. Guess I'll see if the dealer knows about the re-initialization feature. It would be nice if BMW just let us install our own maps, Volvo just lets you install your own.

took delivery in October, nav would not load one morning while in Italy, had worked fine all day the day before, turned the car off went to bed..next morning, it would not load. you will find better instructions on here somewhere but you may indeed need to remove the thumb drive if this happens to you.

basic instructions, turn car off, take out thumb drive...go have coffee...5-10 minutes or something, wait for car to "go to sleep" put thumb drive back in...start car, system reboots and reads thumb drive again...everything worked thereafter. again better instructions found here somewhere, I had to dig through here in a panic when it went dead, but pretty easy fix. Maybe you wont have issues but better to know and not need the info than the alternative.

My last ED was May/June 2013. Back then, they will just load the NAV with Europe map and just reload the US map by your US dealer. Finalizing my ED this May again and nice to know about this flash Drive. Why did they change it to this flash drive?

During our May 2016 M4 #CentennialMTour Euro Delivery in the company of 32 of our closest friends and 13 other M cars (10 M2s, 2 M3s, and 1 other M4) most of us removed the USB stick with the Euro maps on it and replaced it with no problem. Since we were all traveling in a group, for 15 days and 2800 miles, and we had several alpmeisters with us, there was little need for the navigation system. I removed the navigation to use my iPod Touch for music, and when my wife and I took non-group side trips on our own, we replaced the USB stick and the Navigation worked fine. When I was at all of the three tracks that we visited (Nurburgring Nordschleife, Circuit Park Zandvoort, and Spa Francorchamps) I used the Touch for the M Lap Timer.

The key is to remove and replace it when the car is off, i.e. the car is not accessing the thumb drive.

The only person who had any problem at all was in an M2, but hers didn't work at all starting as she was driving away from the Welt. We decided that the USB stick was corrupted and she decided she didn't really need it.

As others have noted, it's not full featured, it doesn't save previous destinations for example.

Took delivery last month at the Welt. After a couple of days the car wouldn't recognize the USB drive (with the Euro maps). Used 'the Google' and followed the iDrive force reboot procedure and all was golden (with car on, hold down volume/mute button for 20-30 seconds).

It's a little late for this question now, but is there any reason to keep the data on the thumbdrive after ED? I looked through the files it didn't see anything I might use so I formatted the drive.
