Brake fluid service notification

Hi,

I have a 2018 F34 approaching (slowly) 25000 miles. Yesterday a notification popped up telling me to schedule a brake fluid service appointment soon. However, my annual service is not due for another couple of months. Aren't those on the same schedule or does brake fluid have its own schedule?

Thanks,

Gene

I believe BMW switched from 2-year to 3-year intervals for brake fluid several years ago. It makes sense to have it performed when you're in for other services.

Brake fluid is every two years.
Is annual service your oil change? If yes get both done together and synch them up.

Are you still under maintenance contract? If yes dealer obviously but if not find a euro independent and start establishing a relationship for out of warranty work that won’t break the bank.

Thank you. This would be the last 'free' service, so I'll get it all done in August. Yes, finding an independent mechanic is on my to do list and I got a couple of references from BMWCCA.

BMW specifies that brake fluid should be changed 3 years from the date of manufacture, which is on the label in the driver's door jamb. After that, it's every 3 years. One should have the brake fluid changed under the free scheduled maintenance (US cars).

As far as when to change brake fluid, there's variable information.

Every year - this was the previous interval many years ago but still after the introduction of DOT4 brake fluid, which is the kind used today. BMW M series cars used to specify this. So did Saab.k Cars with track use may change their brake fluid even more often.

Every 2 years - this was the recommendation for BMW up until approximately 2015. (2013, it was still 2 years)

Every 3 years - this is the current BMW recommendation. Also the current Mercedes Benz and brake fluid manufacturer ATE recommendations. Color starts to change by 3 years.

Every 4 years - this was the latest Saab recommendation around 2010, about 2 years before they went bankrupt and stopped car production. GM also recommends 4 years. Color is definitely changed by year 4.

I feel that 2 years is a best economical interval but 3 is fairly reasonable. 4 years is tops. Don't go beyond that though you won't lose your life if you go to 5 years.
