Absolutely true, plenty of stories here where things got bricked.
It's a risk you take.

Depend what you are doing. I have bimmercode, i coded what I needed then left it alone. No need to keep messing around with stuff though.

Thanks guys.

What I would be looking to do is three things:

1) Get rid of that (highly annoying) welcome message
2) Get rid of that (highly annoying) 37 deg temperature warning
3) Unlock doors when car is placed in park (or shut off)

My mech is telling me not to do this, and I am wondering if I should chance it. If BMWs weren't so expensive to fix, I would only be mildly worried, but I don't want to have a 3k mishap.

Cheers.

There is a list somewhere here with what all can be done.
You should look through that first as there are probably other things you would like.
Does your mechanic have experience doing coding?

Thanks. I had a look thru the list, and the things I mentioned are really the only things I want.

Not sure, but they are the ones that told me not to.

Cheers.

If he is BMW Cert'd cant he do it?

I had a local BMW tech who has the software does it locally on the side. He came to my house and did it in my garage with me sitting there, going line item by line item asking which items I wanted and updated my Nav. I think it was $60?

One would think.... I asked him, and that's when he told me not to b/c of the module sit. I mentioned earlier.

$60? Wow....

Get the Bimmercode app. IIRC it's like $30 and pretty idiot-proof. The things you want to do are some of the basic things people do and Bimmercode can do easily. You can even download the app for free and watch the demo mode.

Right. This is what I was asking about, in regards to the mech. telling me that this coding can mess up other modules.

Thanks.

More than likely your mechanic has not heard of bimmercode. Just follow the basic procedures and you'll be fine. There is alot of stuff in there, so just take it easy.

I had a ton of coding done on my 2012 535I when I first got it. I have had no issues and enjoyed the benefits of the coding.

Or better, use Carly. I recently purchased it and did code many things that I thought were not possible. Also did the diagnoses of my car which scared me by showing that my car has 82 faults, 11 faults just for the engine.
Long story short, it's a safe adapter to buy and their diagnostic tool is amazing. I'm wondering how my dealer didn't catch these faults before...
