Shuddering/Shaking!

Hiya, new member here with some issues that I'd like to quickly solve...

My e39 recently started shaking/shuddering during start up and at idle! So, I popped open the hood and the engine is shaking. I don't remember it shaking before, is this normal? Also, the car doesn't shake at speed, only when it's in not in motion. High revs while driving is perfectly fine so I decided to rev the car in park to see if the shaking worsens and it does. It becomes much much worse as the needle climbs. If I start driving it goes away, however the shuddering intermittently starts again at idle or park.

My guess is that it has something to do with the engine mounts? The car ran smooth before I did a thermostat/air pump/air control valve repair...

"air pump/air control valve repair"? Secondary air pump?

Did you go back over your work and double-check it? What codes have you read?

It makes sense that, since the shaking began after the repairs, you've overlooked something.

My car wouldn't pass smog and the OBDII scanner threw codes P0116, P1421, and P1423. Secondary air pump, engine coolant temperature, and low air flow readings. After doing much research I did the repairs and passed smog. I've rechecked after repairs and the components replaced are all fine

Check your codes. Since the issue is at idle only, have you checked your ICV?

Check your fan clutch too! I just had this problem. If it seems to spin like it's off balance it could be stuck and you'll need to replace it ASAP. $100 part fix.

Not yet, but I plan on it.

I do have a fan blade broken (thanks to a certain family member stepping on my fan :/) but I intended on replacing the fan and fan clutch anyway.

I checked my air filter and it wasn't secure in the housing so I fiddled with it. Now it's only rough/shakes at startup when the engine is cold. After normal engine temp, it starts smooth. Thanks for the suggestions so far.

$136 later my idle shake is now gone! From start up to continuous idle revving, it's rock solid now.

After weighing everyone's input, I narrowed it down to the only thing that changed since my recent repairs. A broken fan. I figured the missing fan blade would cause the fan to spin off axis and cause the engine to shake so I got a new fan clutch and fan.

Thank to everyone who replied!

Good on ya - Truth be told when this happened to me, I brought it to a dealer. Service guy told me it was the fan clutch just on eyeballing it and I left for home to DIY.

This sounds exactly like what is going on with my 540 right now. I'll check out the fan clutch in the morning. Fan itself looks good at first glance.

My car was starting to shake at cold start, and occasionally at a red light (and other random times but only when stationary), then I bought a new siemens VDO MAF and now my issue is fixed. your MAF *MAY* be bad
