2011 bmw 550i xdrive drivetrain malfunction help!

Hello everyone. I recently purchased a 2011 bmw 550i xdrive M sport and shipped it to central america where I currently work. Been driving the car for the past couple weeks and no issues what so ever.

Last night I did a pull on my way home and all the sudden I got the drivetrain malfunction and check engine light on the dash. The bmw shakes, very rough idle and drives poorly with very low power.

I do not want to take the car to the dealer until I have an idea of what the problem may be. I have been reading in threads where people replace parts and problem persists.

Has anyone had this issue happen?

Some say its the coils and spark plugs, maybe injectors, or low pressure sensor, fuel pump...

Yes it happened to me also. I turned off car and restarted it and everything was fine. I took it to dealer 2 weeks later to find an oil leak by the turbos and dealer is replacing them now. Don't know if that was actual cause of it

I restart the car and immediately get the drivetrain malfunction. Hoping it will be the coils! So far my car has no leaks and all fluids are topped.

More than likely a coilpack. My 550i did that after a pull when I have my jb4 installed. I have a cheap obd scanner to tell me which cylinder it was and went to O'Reilly for emergency.

Then I went ahead and bought the eight pack high performance coils from Bavarian motorsports.

Fuggin.....love...them.

Hi, Thanks for the info. Today I decided to get my hands dirty and try to assess the problem.

I checked the coils and swap them with my other bmw. I realized all the coils were ok, however, cylinder 4 from passenger side and cylinder 1 & 2 driver side don't seem to be running. I tested it by disconnecting the coils while car is on to see which is failing.

Do you think I might have blown three spark plugs? I understand blowing 1 spark plug after a pull but 3 at the same time...? Is this normal? Tomorrow taking to the dealer and in this country they are crooks, I want to take it giving them an idea before they try to make me replace everything else besides the spark plugs.

Any follow up BMW550M? I'm curious how it turned out... dealer or do it yourself? Diagnosis? etc.?

Thanks!

I had the same symptoms. After a week of diagnosis my shop thought it was the engine computer and turns out BMW had a software update that fixed the issue (at least so far so goo the past couple of days). Good luck!

So it seems that all the error codes you listed are misfire on multiple cylinders. You confirmed you already swapped coils from the known good ones. It was a spark plug for me when everybody suspected the coil. If you haven't done so or not quite sure, why don't you replace all the spark plugs on all the cylinders as it's one of the easiest job to do. I guess it might be the injector for the worst case but I always wanted to check the spark plug and the coil first as it's much easier to check.
Good luck
