The transmission fluid/filter change resolved my issue.

My assumption is that the fluid level was low (no easy way to check this), cold, and when backing down a hill the torque converter was locking up and causing the motor to stall.

How many miles did your x5 d have when you did the transmission service. Mine is doing the same thing 2011 45,000 miles.

If you're experiencing similar; at your milage & age, I'd do a drain & refill w/ a new pan filter regardless of what the OP says their mileage was... If your trans is doing the same due to low fluid, it really doesn't matter what mileage anyone else's transmission service was performed at...

ZF recommends a fluid change at 8 years, or 80K miles if you drive like a normal person... Sooner if you drive hard and / or at high speeds frequently.

If you're losing trans fluid, you need to find out why...
