The Official E38 'wiki' Thread

Because the actual bimmerfest E38 wiki is pitiful and can only be accessed through the web (yes a link in the app works...but still goes through the web), it would seem best to create one as a 'sticky' where it can be easily read by all no matter how they access the forum.

To keep this organized and clean (on topic) this thread will be kept locked, so if anyone has suggestions, relevant info or corrections, please send me a PM. This will also forever be a work in progress (in my free time on a PC) so please be patient.

List of Resources

Reference material:
e38.org
Timm's meeknet
Owners manuals
E38 Registry
And the sometimes useful repair manuals are from Bentley's.

Just one of the many VIN decoders (and it let's you save as a .PDF).
BMW VIN decoder

For finding part numbers:
realoem
etkbmw
bmwfans
bmwmobiletradition

For buying parts you can click on the "Site Sponsors" link at the top of the page or (in no particular order):
ECSTuning
FCPEuro
bavauto
oembimmerparts
pelicanparts
Bimmerfest classifieds (sections for cars or just parts!)

And there is even a bimmerfest member (SilberVogel) who made a little program (bmwpnpc) that will tell you who has a part in stock and how much they charge.

Finding a local BMW specialist shop:
bimmershops
bimrs.org
BMWCCA

Also when searching for information, keep in mind that many parts and processes for the E38 are the same, or at least extremely similar, on the E31 (8 series), E39 (5 series) and even E53 (X5). If you have one of the first E38's you may find information in E32 (7 series) or E34 (5 series).
Heads up...bimmerfest also has a DIY forum, 7 Series DIY and Coding and Programming! These can be found in the app by selecting "The Best of Bimmerfest" from the main page.

So what is an E38?

Back in the day BMW (Bayerische Motoren Werke aka Bavarian Motor Works) decided to internally use codes to distinguish thier chassis by numbering them E1, E2, E3 and so on where the 'E' stands for Entwicklung (meaning developement). Since this number includes all models, although it took decades to get past E50, they have recently started using 'F' and 'G' which don't stand for anything they are just the next letters in the alphabet since they didn't want to go over 99.

The E38 is the 3rd generation 7-Series with model years 1994-2001.
There were 3 sizes made: i, iL and L7.
The 'i' is the standard wheelbase version sold only with a V8 in the USA.
The 'iL' is the extended wheelbase version (literally stretched rear legroom by about 5") sold in the USA with either a V8 or a V12.
The 'L7' is an even longer wheelbase (10" more than an 'iL') and was not sold in the USA.
There was also a Protection version (slightly armored) and Security version (call it a tank) but not sold in the USA.

For some global info read Wikipedia E38.
To see where the E38 fits in the timeline read Wikipedia 7 Series

NOTE: Since production ended in 2001 some non-US versions may be found here
due to private party importing.
